Adding extra sockets to a ring

As I understand it adding in sockets to an existing ring only requires a minor works certificate, if that. If I add in a new circuit to the CU then it will definitely be notifiable - won't it? I was planning on adding another 4 double sockets in the room. One next to the existing, 2 in the...

Adding extra sockets to a ring

To answer questions raised: - RCDs are on the extensions simply as they were the ones lying around - no other reason, the CU is obviously RCD protected. Although I've been happy with the setup for a while, more and more hardware is going in and it looks a right mess and as I'm going to...

Adding extra sockets to a ring

I am going to add a few extra sockets to a ring main and would like to confirm the correct method of doing this before commencing. I currently have a study, which has only 1 double socket in it. One socket feeds a RCD extension lead to which appliances are plugged into and the other feeds...

    1Gang 2 Way Dimmer Switches

Unfortunately it's not that simple. The wall was recently plastered and painted (light colour). To change to a deeper box will make a mess and I'm cr*p at plastering. I'll end up putting a new backbox in and having to pay a plasterer and painter to redo the room - not an option.

Thanks for the info, I'll take a look at Wickes Steve

    1Gang 2 Way Dimmer Switches

TLC told me that they know of someone who had done it. probably the back box was set a little deeper

    1Gang 2 Way Dimmer Switches

I know I'd only need 1 dimmer but it would have to be placed in the brick wall - i'd leave the other as a switch. Georgian may have been popular in georgian times but if I changed them i'd change the lot and that would cost

    1Gang 2 Way Dimmer Switches

I'm only using the Varilight ones as I was told they would fit a 16mm box. Personally, I'd prefer the normal dimmer type. Unfortunately, the switch that gets used is the one mounted on the brick not the studwall. Georgian brass is necessary as every other switch and socket in the property...

    1Gang 2 Way Dimmer Switches

Unfortunately, the decor is paint (light colour) and none remaining. 1 back box is in brick and the other in stud (easy enough). Although I could honeycomb the wall previous experience tells me this will make a lot of mess and probably require touching up the plaster / paint or both. I...

    1Gang 2 Way Dimmer Switches

Hi, Some advice would be appreciated on the following:- Currently, I have 2 switches (georgian brass) controlling 1 light (240W load). I would like to exchange these switches for dimmers. This would have been straightforward until I found that the back boxes are 16mm and as everyone knows...

Possibly, but then I'll end up with a 7ft high post stuck in the lawn.

    garden lighting

Unfortunately if I went back to the main CU then where the cable would come through the wall is a path and as I need to run the cable around the outside of the garden I'd have to lift the flags to get to the fence, there's no alternative really. If I ran it along the house wall then I end up at...

    garden lighting

I am listening, it's just that I'm desperate to avoid ruining the decoration which was recently done. The main CU is out as this is in the study and means dismantling fixed shelving / desks / wallpaper and not to mention lifting a load of flags (done 12 months ago). A fused spur in the Dining...

    garden lighting

Just checked the dodgy shed wiring and the wiring is taken from the back of a ring socket and into a new CU via armoured cable. The CU has 2 RCDs mounted in it - 1 6A for light & 1 16A for the socket. So if I was to run the garden lights from the 16A RCD would this be acceptable? I know it...

    garden lighting

Thanks coljack these are cheaper than the ones I looked at and will do for the planting area but not the decking/patios, I'll still need power to give the brightness required

    garden lighting

Thought about running ELV from dodgy shed with transformers inside but some of the cable runs would be 60+ metres. Really wanted to run 240V and then simply put necessary transformers in IP rated box. That way I can change the lights / add extra without having to dig up cable. I'll check out...

    garden lighting

Thanks for explanation Steve. I know it's all going to be notifiable under part P. However, starting from stratch (main CU) will mean ruining decor, lifting flags (done last year for Conservatory). What about taking feed from garage as this is feed directly from main CU? If I did go back to the...

    garden lighting

The addition of the second CU was done by an electrician, should that not have been done and if not what is wrong with it (done prior to Part P). If I can't use that second CU then presumably I'd have to go back to the main CU and wire from there (not practical really) or is there another way

    garden lighting

Hi, I am looking to run mains to 5 separate areas of the garden and then power ELV lights from these. Currently there is power in ashed (done 10 years ago, pre Part P) as follows. Armoured cable taken from the back of a house socket (ring) and feeds another consumer unit in the shed. One feed...
