how much is a reasonable day rate for a qualified carpenter?

I am exactly the same, I give a price, and if it takes me a day longer than I anticipated, I cut my loses, I never say to the client, 'ah erm I'm sorry but I need to charge you X', like you said I made the mistake, not them. But it can be very difficult at times, specially when I am stripping...

    Which chocolates

Same in sainsburys and tescos. I bought 2 tins of roses in sainsburys for £9 for both, popped into tesco the day after, and they were doing them at a much higher price. Popped back into tesco a couple days after, and Lo and behold, tescos were doing them also for £9 for 2 tins.

    putting up lining paper

This might sound a bit fick here CC, but instead of lining twice using 600, wouldnt it be better to line with 1000 or even 1200? You seem to be making more work for yourself. :? Dont get me wrong, I appreciate you are a perfectionist, I am too, but even I would'nt line twice unless it was...

painting or removing woodchip?? help please !

Woodchip is not the easiest paper to strip, specially if the paper has been painted with a Silk paint. Its just a matter of patience, time and effort. Try and score the paper from top to bottom with big crisscrosses, you can buy a score thingy, but I have always used a knife to score...

Painting thinly painted ceiling, not the best finish?

Did you wash the paste residue off the ceiling with SugarSoap, and did you give it a good sand down? As the existing paint has come off under the new paint, you will see the difference in the layers of paint. Your best bet is to give the ceiling a light rub down, as you have already...

    Help with plasterboard

All good advice there, :D but I will just tell you what I would do regarding the flaky peeled bits of the plasterboard. The problem when the PB is ripped/torn/flaked, is that when you try and sand it down it will rip/tear up again, not everywhere on the PB, but it will happen somewhere along...
