Cast iron soil pipe looking very bad, replace or paint? Plus roof issue.

Hello I have a Victorian with cast iron soil pipe that is badly in need of some TLC. I contacted a local tradesmen and he quoted me about £160 all in for the job, which is fair enough. The issue is that the roof to the kitchen where it goes over does not neatly adjoin my roof and so the trades...

Would you buy a cob house?

Just an update for anyone following this. I went to the village and summoned the energy to visit the next door neighbour. They were friendly and helpful and put my mind to rest about the cob, which they rate highly and do not see an issue with. I pressed for any signs of defects in their house...

Would you buy a cob house?

Hey Stephen, thanks for your take, sounds like it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Thanks also for the lime plaster tip and the supplier link too (bookmarking this as we speak). Oh and should we buy this house I will definitely get that booklet and treat the house well.

Would you buy a cob house?

Thanks very much for this. Think we'd get a cob specialist to take a look before we commit to it as they must be able to take a look at it for a few bob, I would think. Happy to hear about hanging things, I was worried about this as I do like a little bit of DIY!

Would you buy a cob house?

Well I may have been a bit flippant there. I don't mind upkeep but I prefer things I can do myself, which to be fair may be the case here after a learning curve. I am on the fence between those two perspectives but do take your point entirely!

Would you buy a cob house?

A canny idea, I will give that a go. Two birds, one stone as well I guess!

Would you buy a cob house?

Yeah that is something I am worried about, strangely they have them in the conservatory that has been added on but I guess maybe they aren't screwed into the house but to the conservatory. Thanks for the input.

Would you buy a cob house?

Hello Forumgoers. My partner and me are in a bit of a pickle regarding a potential house buy. We like the house and the location and can afford it but the one snag is that the house is cob. I realise this means it is basically a big mud hut and worry about how much of a future maintenance...

    Ceiling Light Wiring Block Safe?

Thanks to both of you. When they are both in the "off" position the light is on. When one of them is in the "on" position the light is on. It is only when one of them is in the on position and the light is on that you can use the other switch to turn the light off by putting it in the "on"...

    Ceiling Light Wiring Block Safe?

Thanks to you both, you are quick on the gun but edited it now to reflect the fact that i found another switch and it all seems well!

    Ceiling Light Wiring Block Safe?

Haha thanks, what a thought. "change your life" is one way of putting it! Thanks, good to know. I thought it was the voltage previously but then as this is what everyone thinks i thought perhaps it was one of this public miss-conceptions that are so rife, turns out it isn't, the voltage...

    Ceiling Light Wiring Block Safe?

Hello again to everyone. I am sorry it has been such an ordeal helping me out but thanks to all of you who have contributed, you have aided my knowledge immensely. Just an update. I connected it up and all seems well! When i initially turned the light on it was lit in the wrong switch...

    Ceiling Light Wiring Block Safe?

You won't believe me but I had actually come to this realisation myself. I used to love tinkering with batteries and circuits and things like that but for some reason once it was mains electricity I didn't think the same principles applied. I think it might have been a fear of the consequences...

    Ceiling Light Wiring Block Safe?

Thanks for your reply and the link. I have looked at this diagram in detail and this is why i am questioning how they had it connected. I understand that the wiring was put there for the benefit of the next person wiring and that you don't want to connect them the wrong way around but that is...

    Ceiling Light Wiring Block Safe?

Oh my why didn't i think of that? That does the trick. I have another issue now. I carefully photo'd how the old light was installed (picture 1 - black light in shot) and connected the new one in the same exact way (photo 2 - wires and mount only). However looking closely at the wires it...

    Ceiling Light Wiring Block Safe?

Thanks for the advice on this but no need to despair! The first picture is what was left when i took the old fitting off. I didn't want to mess around with a load of wires with tape around them and it was only when you mentioned the 4 connector box did i realise i'd seen that in the light...

    Ceiling Light Wiring Block Safe?

Does anyone see any issues with drilling new holes for the mounting bracket, will i hit wires? Having said that maybe i won't have to if i put it all neatly in one box as suggested.
