Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

Should now be an image of what the feed tank looked like. It had a brown skin on it that could easily be removed. This is the tank after I've taken out the first cup full of skin. You can see it's not broken under the vent pipe so I'm assuming this has not been running.

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

With the quiet running of the pump I've turned the Hot Water circuit to 'Constant'. This means when the CH was required first thing this morning it wasn't competing with the Water. As a result I've got a reasonable performance from all radiators (and with a wind finding all the bad windows!)...

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

ABV is going. I've run everything down this morning and checked the tank (which has a brown slime on it). All cleaned now but I know I've got to sort that. When I fired it back up I bled the pump and after 5 minutes of very noisy running it's quieter than it's ever been. But the ABV got...

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

D_Hailsham I have all the rads open and the ABV set above 0.5 BAR and it's still scalding hot.

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

OK. So I'll ditch the bucket test. I think I'll also look to replace the ABV in case it's faulty. It still runs scalding hot in any of the tests I've done. It also was added at the same time as this radiator. This morning I'll start with a crude re-balancing in line with Agile's suggestion.

It was one of the suggested tests on this forum

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

Right - Next Test. Everything off except the faulty radiator (including Water circuit) Within 30 seconds flow pipe is stonking hot and the return is hotter than it's ever been. Radiator still cool. After 2 minutes the third of the eight panels is getting really hot, all others cool...

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

D_Hailsham I'll do the calcs later. The flow temperature shows on the display panel as you move the control. So yes, I probably had the control set to 67c but there is still some movement left before maximum. Still think the ABV is a problem (unless the system really is building up too...

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

Agile This part of the CH is on one of the only existing bits of pipework. We had the Dining Room/Kitchen knocked through so had to remove a large old panel radiator (to allow the wall to be removed. This new Column Radiator is connected to the shorter pipes. Ironically, this old panel was the...

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

Perplexed again I had good flow last night. Of the 3 radiators that I put to max I had to turn down the one in the back bedroom (above the faulty one) to reduce the temperature for sleeping. This morning, the faulty radiator was very cool again. It seems the boiler was back to short...

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

And Agile I'm not ignoring your advice. Just doing the easy stuff first. So far I haven't opened up the loft or got anything wet. I'll be doing that at the weekend. ps. I'm also very slow (I couldn't make a living from this). The next test is all the radiators off except the poor one. (my...

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

Now for the silly update. In order to get the boiler working I opened up 3 radiators fully. The bathroom TRV. The hall (that was virtually closed) and the rear bedroom (above the faulty radiator and previously wound down a lot) All 3 are stonking hot. But the faulty radiator is now warm...

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

Next test. Open up 3 rads fully and set room thermostat up. Back to Boiler and find the flame symbol is alight but it's silent. d40 says 53c; d41 says 43c After 2 minutes the traditional boiler sound starts and d40 rises steadily to 67c while d41 still says 43c Boiler stays at this sound...

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

Right... First test D0 shows it set to 14kW The 428, as bought, was 28kW. (The 418 is 18 and the smallest 415 is 15 - easy really) Now for the temp measures, but I need some flow first.

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

Agile Mostly OK. But it's not a system boiler. Just an open vent classic set up. I'll run it with everything off and see what I get. Any thoughts on the ABV staying hot? D_Hailsham I didn't see them actually doing the balancing but at the start they put the caps on (perhaps to stop the...

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

Wow. I am going to be busy tonight. I think I watched the Vaillant engineer going through this sequence. He did give me a rapid verbal update on what he did to back off the boiler but there is no way I could remember that sequence. As far as balancing is concerned the last Heating company...

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

Agile thanks. I will be doing the bucket test anyway but I'm just working out whether to have replacement valves ready at the same time. What's not clear from the FAQ is whether I should do the test with the pump running. I'm guessing that the important thing is to note how much flows over a...

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

Thanks D_Hailsham I concur that it is the Danfoss (don't know why it didn't come up on my searches). It is fitted with the flow coming in horizontally and leaving vertically down. The bit out of the picture is the right angled flow down from the 22mm flow pipe between the pump and the Heating...

Bypass Valve still flowing when fully wound down

So that theory is blown. This morning this problem radiator was nearly stone cold. I shut down the lounge radiator and the water circuit and after about 15 minutes one of the 8 vertical fins was very hot. the return pipe was stone cold. The rest of the radiators in the system have their...
