to anyone with experience of replacing fridge thermostats

That "wire" is part of the stat - new one should come with one. Just find screw/clip that attaches it to the cooling element and replace. Actually its not a wire in the electrical sense - but a conductive tube (in the heat sense) to measure the temp of the cooling element. Have you tested...

Vista and USB Modem not compatible ???

Vista is new - driver support for some devices is limited - will be along in time. That's one of the problems of being an early adopter.

    A complex problem?

Is it just the lighting circuit - do table lamps plugged into the ring flicker?

    New wireless thermostat recommendations?

I'll probably regret saying this, but did anyone ever say that wasn't a possible solution?

    New wireless thermostat recommendations?

Debate - not arguement  What happens when the radiator is turned right off? Obviously if the room is still to hot there is no option at all but to move the stat, as no matter much you restrict the flow you're on a loosing wicket if the tank is providing more than enought heat. This...

hooking up altenative power to the house

I asked if an out of the box solution was available - the B&Q turbine ships with one (found while researching solar water heating) - just allows you to plug you turbine (or whatever) straight into the mains (whilst still connected to the DNO). http://www.reuk.co.uk/Windsave-1000.htm Look...

    New wireless thermostat recommendations?

By volume I meant flow  (as I said in the text). I just tried some maths and if you use BTU = Flow(gpm)*500*temp drop(oF). You can work out that a 5000 BTU rad needs about 0.5gpm at a temp drop of 20oF (sorry about the units figures come from a US rad manufacturers spec sheet). If...

    New wireless thermostat recommendations?

Wasn't suggesting otherwise - after all I did offer up the heatmiser as a suggestion. I was just agreeing with Tony and Chris that the OP should also be able to improve the situation by turning the rad(s) right down so the room warms up slower and therefore the rest of the house gets more...

    New wireless thermostat recommendations?

Heat output into room = (temp in - temp out) * volume As the flow/volume decreases the total heat out will also reduce, of course the temp drop increases as the flow decreases so the resultant graph is a curve, not a straight line, but never the less the heat output decreases with flow.

    New wireless thermostat recommendations?

That's odd I thought this was what he said: Simple physics - heat out = heat in (with an allowance for efficency). If you really believe that reducing the heat in will not affect the heat out the challenge is there - patent it, and make youself rich. I await next years Times rich list. :wink...

    New wireless thermostat recommendations?

We are not taliking about getting more heat out, but less heat :!: You seem to be claiming that if you reduce the flow significantly (to zero even) the heat ouptut will remain the same. If you can demonstrate this I suggest you do what my old thermodyamics lecturer would suggest in this...

    New wireless thermostat recommendations?

Simple physics - if there is less water flowing through the rad there is less energy being pumped into the room. Therefore this room will warm up slower in relation to other rooms (which are still receiving their full measure of hot water). Good balance is essential in any heating system with a...

    Why 2 header tanks

Got me thinking we have two tanks in the same arrangement? I remember - one feeds the hot water tank and the other the supplies cold to the showers. Hence no stagnation. How many feeds from the tanks do you have. As Kev said are they/it coming from the tank with the inlet and is it a single...

    New wireless thermostat recommendations?

Agree with Chris and Tony - balance the flow in that room so it heats up slower (you may only need the eight of a turn open, or less, as Chris suggested). I've just fitted heatmiser PRT (includes optimal start logic) this was approx £40 - works very well. Gets the house to 20oC with no...

hooking up altenative power to the house

Tim - we seem to falling over each other a bit this afternoon :) I wasn't disagreeing with - just pointing out that it's not just about the cost to the consumer, you have to take account of the wider picture. If the B&Q generator only saves £10 a year over it's 10 year lifetime, that's £100...

Filament bulbs to be banned - EEC initiative

Obviously the answer is yes, as americans don't understand irony. But I'll admit it may have been a bit too subtle. Cheers Steve

hooking up altenative power to the house

It not just the cost effective question - it's the overall energy in/energy out question as well. Seems hard to believe that the small energy savings of the B&Q generator justify the energy and environmental impact of producing the thing in the first place.
