    air bricks

I've seen them papered over and sealed in before, I don't think it will cause a problem. You can also get cover vents which you can open and close.

    Damp Query

Hi, I'm not an expert, there are a lot more experienced people on this forum. This is a tricky one. Really you need to ascertain how the damp is getting there. Probably stating the obvious, could some rubble be bridging the gap in the cavity wall? Could the damp course be damaged? Is...

    Maggots on bedroom carpet

There must be a food source. You say unused hearth - could a bird have falled down the chimney into the unused fire place? clean it up - that should solve the problem.

    Fixing curtain pole

Yes, directly to the wall if possible. At the end of the day you will have the same problems fixing the batton to the wall as you would fitting the rail.

Wall cavity / filling around new double glazing installation

get as much rubble out as possible, it is bridging the gap between the outer and inner skin. This could allow damp to travel across. Insulated as much possible.

Snapped screw - what to do.

Is any of the head poking out, or is it all in the door? You could try to unscrew it using pliers.

What about a metal cladding type roof?

    Steel beam size

The structural dimensions of the beam give it it's strength in different directions, it's not just a case of the mass of the beam. It is how the mass is distributed and what it is being used for. The beams look fairly similar in size, and I would guess that the two engineers have run through...

    expansion bolts

Ok, I still recon you can drill through the insulated panel, and chemical fix to the wall. Use a good thickness of anchor, and use a spacer tube (i.e. a secondary tube to go into the hole in the render, but not into the brick) Preferably stell. This should help to support the canopy and...

Freezing 70's extension. Kingspan on roof but walls COLD

I would also think that you could put some rolls of insulation in the roof space? That's pretty cheap.

Freezing 70's extension. Kingspan on roof but walls COLD

I'm not really an expert to be honest. I guess if someone suggested that you can plasteboard directly to the panels, then you can. I would think that as long as most of the area is insulated then you should gain a quite a bit of warmth, but the more insulation the better of course.

How Much To Insert 2 RSJ's in 2 Load Bearing Walls?

One fundamental thing is that there is no 'meat' in the job for the builder. It's a hassle job for not much profit, so you add some in.

How Much To Insert 2 RSJ's in 2 Load Bearing Walls?

The builder has to make profit. At the end of the day, there is a going rate for this kind of job as not everyone can do the work. There is also an element of risk involved. He could turn up and find that the structure is not suitably prepared etc. Someone really needs to come and take a...

    expansion bolts

Look at page 27 and 28 of this. It shows the sleeve. You can buy the all thread from any diy store. Make sure you buy stainless steel. http://www.fischer.co.uk/PortalData/18/Resources/fixing_systems/salesinformation/_documents/01chemicalfixings/01.pdf

    expansion bolts

No, there are plastic sleeves. Hang on, I'll see if I can find a link to show you what I mean. Otherwise i will have a look at work tomorrow to see if I have a drawing.

Freezing 70's extension. Kingspan on roof but walls COLD

Hi, To make it warmer, you could put some battens up, put some insulated panels up, and then plasterboard. I don't think you should move the manhole, it's probably maintenance access for a drain. We used to have one in our old conservatory :-s Humidity - I guess you need good...

How Much To Insert 2 RSJ's in 2 Load Bearing Walls?

I am sure you know what you are doing more than I do, but personally I wouldn't contemplate removing load bearing walls and installing RSJ's myself. Best to get a professional in - in my opinion. I should look through the local directory and phone for some more quotes. That's what I would...

How Much To Insert 2 RSJ's in 2 Load Bearing Walls?

You are paying for the expertise, and also the markup on materials. They will probably charge a 25% on materials. If you think the quote is way out then get alternative quotes. If they are all coming in around the same figure then they have calculated correctly. Where did you get your...

    expansion bolts

That's a bit tricky. I am thinking maybe, drill through to the wall - drill a hole in the wall, put a sleeve in, then a long threaded rod (chemical anchor or all thread) - then setting chemical. Then when it goes off, you have a projecting thread to fix your bracket onto. Will need to...

    strong brick bonding adhesive

Is it just a surface crack or a major crack? A surface crack could just be filled with an exterior grade filler. If the cracks are large then it could be structural.
