Weird Light Switch - Any Ideas?

Indeed, iirc, freeview originally had enough bandwidth for around 30 channels at a proper quality. Then they crushed, squeezed and compressed the **** out of it. I don't even try to watch channels like Viva, Movie Mix etc - and to top that off some of them really cover the screen in logos and...

To Paint Wallpaper or Not to Paint Wallpaper?

I've found pads to be great for less mess and great coverage - and quicker drying time. Although I could really do with getting hold of a better and bigger one. I have a tub of polyfilla, you reckon that watered down and "skimmed" over the wall would do the job? To be honest, where the paint...

To Paint Wallpaper or Not to Paint Wallpaper?

That. Was. Amazing! Thought I'd test it out before work, 3 sheets down in about 30 minutes. The worst thing I did was score it (as recommended) which made it come off in chunks, if I hadn't of done that I could have got them down in one piece. Amazing, I want to do the rest but have to go to...

To Paint Wallpaper or Not to Paint Wallpaper?

I'm just out to buy a steamer - while I'm away, any tips/advice on using it near/around wall sockets? Obviously there's the water factor to take into account

Weird Light Switch - Any Ideas?

Indeed, one of the common arguments for digital signal is "it works or it doesn't", this isn't exactly true. All digital data is sent, like a jigsaw, in chunks called packets. When it gets to the other end, the packets are put back together to form the information. Digital signals, therefore...

Weird Light Switch - Any Ideas?

Selling crap to gullible people is fine. But what I mean is, if these things are actually dangerous to the point people can be killed, why are they legally being sold? FWIW, in addition to spec the quality of material and shielding in AV cables does make a difference. I'm not saying spend...

Weird Light Switch - Any Ideas?

Thanks for the great explanation Bernard. I'm finding it amazing how many tools are being sold that are simply dangerous. I recently bought a cable/stud detector, it told me there were no cables in the wall beneath the sockets and live cables above. I didn't believe it so opened the wall up to...

To Paint Wallpaper or Not to Paint Wallpaper?

Thanks for the input. Do you have a stripper in mind? (link?) Or do you think my floor steamer would do the job? I'm guessing that will be much better and cleaner than using water as I've seen. (The floors are wooden slates / fake floor boards) I have one of these:

To Paint Wallpaper or Not to Paint Wallpaper?

I've just bought the house I've been renting for the last five years and desperate to get rid of this pink wallpaper in my bedroom. My mum reckons she'd just paint it - she's quite handy/crafty. I know ideally it should be removed, but what do you think? Is it too inconsistent to paint? Or...

Weird Light Switch - Any Ideas?

Could you explain? I've seen non contact testers used a lot and come highly recommended. I, of course, test it on a live wire before and after I test it on the unit I'm working on.

Weird Light Switch - Any Ideas?

I'm just testing to check the cables are dead before I put my fingers in - by putting a current detector pen in/on/around the wires inside the switch box.

Weird Light Switch - Any Ideas?

Thanks. Just to update, so there's 3 cable pairs in the light switch box (which I know understand with looping in switches) and 5 cable pairs coming out of the top of the conduit. I can't seem to work out where the extra 2 are going without pulling the entire roof of the house apart. When I...

    Removing Backbox with Red Clips

I might have a plan, I'll update you when I try it

    Removing Backbox with Red Clips

There is no paint, the box comes free from the plaster, but there's red clip poking out of the outside of the box behind the plaster at the sides that doesn't seem to have a way to being pushed back into the box

    Removing Backbox with Red Clips

I've tried that :/ It's almost as if when you first put them in you clip them back and they go over a bump that you can't get them back over :/ I also haven't seen red ones anywhere in the shops, they are all blue or yellow clips. All mine in the house are red clips (sockets and switches)

    Removing Backbox with Red Clips

Can anyone tell me how to remove a back box with red clips? (photo attached) The logic makes sense, push back clips, pinch them together towards the middle of the box, pull whole box out. But that doesn't work. I've been told if I keep applying pressure to get them towards the center of the...

Weird Light Switch - Any Ideas?

Thanks for the link, edited, didn't spot the next section of that page... Ok, so this might sound stupid and please remember I won't be connecting the mains. But is there any chance that this setup means I don't have to run switch cables for the new lights?

Weird Light Switch - Any Ideas?

I've just bought my first house and mounted 3 down lights. Now I'm coming to run the cables I'm a bit confused (fwiw a qualified electrician will be making the mains connection). While I attempt to trace these cables, anyone know what's going on with this setup? The house is circa 2006. I've...

USB Wall Sockets - Can I Do it?

Perhaps 2 of these? (one for each set of spots) http://www.screwfix.com/p/wagobox-light-junction-box/8423f This makes sense to me, but I wouldn't want to complicate things for him
