IP44 downlighters necessary in a bathroom?

Thanks, that was the sort of thing I was getting at, not so much a necessity but more worthwhile :)

    Inverter questions..

I know what you're saying, as has been said if preferable just leave the motor end of screen un-earthed, just tape/heatshrink it off. As for screen giving to large a cable, I either half the braid and cut the rest off until it is small enough, or I gather it up, tiwst it tight with pliers...

    CH draining - this OK?

Yep, I'm slowly learning!! If I hadn't finsihed in time I would;ve just left the hot water off until tomorrow, but the missus would've moaned - tough ;) This is the trouble with shifts, on a late shift you always have to be mindful that whatever you're doing you need to be ready to go to...

    CH draining - this OK?

haha, this is my first big(ish) plumbing job in my house (renovating bathroom, moving basin, rads, etc) and not a lot is going right so far. Nothing fundamental just a few little things that should be straightforward end up holding me up!! The missus never understands, she just wants her...

    Inverter questions..

Also, where you mention that it's a pain to earth at motor end, are you wiring directly to terminals, or to a plug? Either way I normally gather up the screen, twist it together and then either solder it to the case of the plug which then earths it if the motor has an earth to casing...

    Inverter questions..

What sort of distance are you travelling with the cables? Possible that on short runs you won't have as much of an issue anyway. I'm pretty sure that whenever I have installed invertors I have tied the screen to earth at the cabinet/invertor end, then at the plug/motor end just tie the...

    CH draining - this OK?

I jubilee clipped the hose. I did have some old washing mc hoses but I seem to have lost them. Wasted cause this morning now anyway as I have to go to work at 1pm, and by that time I needed to have drained the system, modify some rad pipework, refill all ready before I go to work. It's...

    CH draining - this OK?

Cheers guys, well after some poking around I found that if I nearly fully unscrewed the drain cocks, the washer would unseat, but then the only way to get it to drain down hose is to have it open enough that it also drains out of screw  Softus, I have a point in my kitchen where the...

    CH draining - this OK?

Oh, well every write up I read said turn off gas & elec, so I turned the gas off anyway. Got a new problem now, tried both the downstairs rad drain cock & one on the boiler but getting no water out? If I open the upstairs rads vents I just get water come out of those just as you would if...

IP44 downlighters necessary in a bathroom?

Two of them will probably be above the bath although I haven't measured it out yet. Even if they were they'd be 2.4m above the floor and no likliness of water jets in the area, so Zone 2 which only demands SELV or 230V with suitable IP rating backed up by RCD? Or am I wrong there? I'm just...

IP44 downlighters necessary in a bathroom?

In a bathroom with no shower or water jets is it still preferable to use IP44 SELV downlighters due to being better proteted from moisture, etc than std SELV downlighters? I'm thinking along the lines of lamps blowing less regularly? Just weighing up whether it is worth paying double for...

    CH draining - this OK?

One other thing, obviously I'll turn the boiler controls off but do I need to blow out the pilot light?

    Is this bad practice?

Well, what a difference some new gas & flux makes  How much easier & quicker!! I was using some old, old flux and the dieing butane and when trying to add a little solder to the joint it really wasn't flowing well. Cue some new flux and gas, the solder ring joint quickly melts &...

    Is this bad practice?

Thanks chris, I'm off to find some gas in a mo! One question, if you want to re-heat a joint that has been soldered, do you need to flux it around the joint to get the solder to flow again?

    Is this bad practice?

Thanks for the optimism! Hopefully all will be well when I live it up tomorrow, as long as I can get some gas. It's a DIY torch but not a pencil one, hopefully I can get a gas can to fit it. Might go for propane over the butane if they are interchangeable, should give a bit more heat then :)

    Is this bad practice?

OK, well I haven't got any inverted U's so assume OK. Considering it was my first time soldering, things didn't go too badly. Although I did ruin a run I'd made by moving it before it had cooled and an end fell off :( My old chap said he always runs a bead of solder around the solder...

    Is this bad practice?

Yeah, I suppose - just going to go with what seems easier then :)

    Is this bad practice?

I know that central heating systems will often have drops and rises, as they fall to go under floor then rise to go to taps, etc and that overall pressure is measured from bottom of tank (gravity sys) to spout of tap. But is it bad practice for a run of pipe to have more up/downs than...

Bit of a problem - draining gravity system

OK, thanks for that - I'm currently weighing it up :)

Bit of a problem - draining gravity system

Really? The floor will be tiled over so I was thinking along the lines of using a more permanent connection, although I've never had a compression fitting fail. The pipes are pretty close together under the floor so compression may well be easier, just thought it was bad practice under a...
