    I'd imagine you have air in your pipework. Lower the shower head to the as low as you can get it turn on the shower to the middle of cold/hot and see it if can force the air out and water through.

    I just leave one downstairs tap on and then turn it off before you turn the mains on, then just go around to all the taps and turn them on (there will be a bit of spluttering but will work its way out after a few seconds).

    Normally you can finely tune by turning the mains water stop cock down enough to stop the banging in the wall but leave it open enough for decent pressure. If that fails to work then clipping the pipes in the wall is the only option.

    How about you fill your upstairs cistern up with water till it goes down the overflow and see if water comes out the same external pipe. If it does, then your toilet (float valve) is at fault. If not, the problem is elsewhere.

    This topic is six years old. Turn off your mains cold water and run all the hot taps till empty. This will drain your tank and should take about 10 minutes.

    Go to their kitchen mixer tap and run some hot water and then put your hand over the spout tightly. Then turns on the cold tap and this will backfill it through the hot pipe. You will need to hold the spout tight. This will clear the air lock!
