    How's my CU looking?

Why ?? Lots of sparks seem to do this is it just force of habbit ? It certainly isn't worth changing it. Or will the reply be so that the bus bar should take the most load on the shortest sections  This made me smile - people do get hung up on copper showing on terminations when there...

Bathroom Fan 240V with pull cord in Zone 1?

If its rated at IP44 then I would say its ok. You cant have switch gear in zone1 unless its selv, but if the switch is integral to the fan then its ok, as it would be for a luminaire with a pull swittch. And yes, an FCU is double pole.

    Shower Isolator Location

As I said, a main switch is a perfectly good isolator... :D But you are correct - the instructions usually indicate a DP switch pull cord or otherwise after the CU....interestingly one manufacturer, mira, state the switch can be in an adjacent room...

    downlights in pitched roof

B@ll@x There should be a membrane above the joists and below the roof tiles. The cellotex depth is less than the joists, I think its 75mm usually but certainly no more than 100mm which is less than the joist depth. So you can pull the cellotex downwards while cutting it to avoid damage to the...

    Shower Isolator Location

My understanding is that mechanical maintenance refers to non electrical work being carried out by non electrically skilled persons, e.g. the cleaning of a fan or ducting. I am not aware of any common routine mechanical maintenance required for a shower that requires the removal of its cover...

Bathroom Fan 240V with pull cord in Zone 1?

You are allowed 240V equipment such as fans, showers and lights in zone 1 as long as protected by an RCD, (and you could in the 16th, too) But you should also have an isolator for the fan, and if its a run on timer tyope then this will need to be triple pole, which can be pull cord or...

    downlights in pitched roof

I have fitted loads of GU10 downlighters in vaulted ceilings and have just used firerated ones. I ensure the builders leave a 150 square void in the cellotex around the proposed locations before they overboard with plasterboard. BCO have either never noticed or ever been bothered about it. I...

    How to wire a JB

 T&E = Three core & earth. My method was 3core&E from each switch to the JB, plus a loop in with neutral, and a switch live and neutral out to the luminaire. Obviously not using cpc's as anything other than cpc's !!

    How to wire a JB

yeah I do the same on two way lighting on a rewire if I can only pull a single T&E through both existing switch drops, except I dont do the knife thing, just make a joint in the JB for the common strapper.

    How to wire a JB

What do you mean by splicing with a stanley knife ?? Like most I also avoid JB's where possible and have rewired 4 bed houses without a single JB or crimp but sometimes they are practical in lighting modifications. Its just one of those things that people do differently but it just seems to...

    How to wire a JB

May sound a daft question, but how do you do it neatly and quickly ? I have found the best method for me is to strip each T&E cable, cut the individual cores to suit its entry point, and terminate one cable and one conductor at a time, lightly tightening the screws, and then adding each...

    x5 RCD test fail.

I have had some strange results testing RCBO's, where when testing directly at the rcbo terminals with probes at the CU can't get a trip at x1 or x5, but works fine when testing at the end of the circuit. Anecdotaly, I was informed by an NICEIC inspector that you should never shorten the...

Getting one back on the distributors - very useful info..

Any takers ? PME seems to be topic of the moment, but the DNO's seem very slack over the whole issue. Is this because they are unprofessional or doesn't it actually matter (I'm being deliberately provocative here)

Getting one back on the distributors - very useful info..

Ok, fair enough. It has however occured to me that in a non PME area, it only takes one household to have an un-noticed neutral-earth fault on the consumer side (and I've come across a fair few N-E in even my limited experience on the non RCD side of split loaders) to create their own "TN-C-C...

Getting one back on the distributors - very useful info..

    a) I believe I have acted responsibly and contacted the DNO and acted on their advice. b) If the supply tarnspires not to be PME, please explain why the installation is unsafe.
