    Advice on plastering

Ha Ha you have got me there!! Its better to see it rather than explain it. I would say if you were to skim a wall then do it in two halves, top half, bottom half. To do the top half apply form middle to top. To do the bottom half apply from bottom to middle.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO PAY FOR PLASTERING PLEASE?

I think £300 sounds about right for a small bathroom. Its a job that could be done in a day or a day and a half by 1 man without a labourer. Materials will be about £30

    Advice on plastering

I think TM was refering to the upwards sweeping motion you use to apply the plaster. You will need very long arms to do a full sweep from bottom to top so do it in two halves. Do the top first then drop down and do the bottom.

Builder has fixed 9.5 boards to stud walls/ceilings

I have always wondered who uses those little boards. Now I know who. My questions is WHY? Surely there are no benefits what so ever using those little boards. Unless you use a car for your work vehicle.

    Pricing a job.....

It all depends on what you want/think you should earn in a day. If I did one wall it would only take half a day with all the prep work and cleaning up after. I always charge a bit extra for half day jobs as its normaly too late to go and start another. The size of the wall wouldnt really...

    Pricing for friends & mates

I think you should charge them something but probably half the price of what it would cost for a pro to do the job. Im not sure what the prices are in your area are but I think if you did a room for around £150 then that would be fair. This way you gain some experience and they get to give...

So I've given plastering a go...

I would say you have done a good job there. I got into the plastering trade by doing what you have done. I never wanted to be a plasterer but just kind of fell into it. I moved into a house with artex walls and ceilings and decided id give it a go at skimming the walls. There was no way I...

plasterboard dot n dab, horizontal or vertical??

I would just fit them horizontaly. I have had trouble in the past with getting boards into pokey little rooms. Rather than struggle and bash the edges of the boards trying to get them in I just put them in horizontaly. I never dropped any boards behind the other but I can imagine how...

All part of the service...or not?

I dont mind lowering a ceiling rose or loosening up sockets and switches. I would prefer to have them totaly removed but its hardly ever done. It only takes a couple of minutes to do and I get the customer to screw them back up when the plaster is set. I always offer to take rads off at...

    Dot and Dab

If your worried about the unit not holding any weight, you can always cut a piece of the plasterboard away and fix a piece of timber to the wall behind where the unit is going. It wont be seen and will give you a better fix.

    Sealing brickwork before plastering

If you are back to brick then you will need to apply a backing coat first. Use some bonding, scratch it to give it a key then skim it when it is firm. You will not need to apply pva just make sure the brickwork is clean and free of dust.
