How common is it for CH to leak into immersion tank?

I'm searching for a leak in a sealed system causing the system to need topping up every week or 10 days or so. I replaced two rads that had weeps that had rusted a fair bit around the weeps, but there are no other leaks that I can find, no ceiling stains, no drip from the safety valve, no...

Boiler starts up when cold water tap turned off

I had this problem. It was because turning off the cold tap increased pressure in the cold supply which tricks the boiler into thinking a hot tap has turned on. The solution is cheap and easy, fitting a non-return valve to the cold pipe feeding the boiler will stop it for less than a tenner...

Mysterious RCD tripping & mysterious readings for a boil

I think I found the problem today anyway. But I've left the ring main sockets off the CU RCD anyway as the occupiers no longer want to be guinea pigs. So I may never know if it was the real problem. I took a voltage reading on the light fitting they complained was excessively blowing bulbs. I...

Mysterious RCD tripping & mysterious readings for a boil

Page 20 of the On Site Guide. RCD's required - (iii) on all socket-outlets that may reasonably be expected to supply portable equipment used outdoors. The RCD sockets I've fitted are on the only outlets that would supply outdoor equipment. No other point relevant to this property says that...

Mysterious RCD tripping & mysterious readings for a boil

Well I'm kind of coming to the end of the road on this one & tomorrow I'm shifting the sockets off the RCD & installing RCD sockets on the ground floor outlets close to doors (2 of them). It's a bit of a cop out, but the occupiers are starting to blame me, when really it's their place, their...

Mysterious RCD tripping & mysterious readings for a boil

Still no joy. The RCD is still tripping when a particular light is switched and occasionally when others are switched. The occupiers have said today that they felt prior to the RCD being fitted that there was an excessive number of bulbs blowing mainly in the fitting that is the one causing...

Mysterious RCD tripping & mysterious readings for a boil

For anyone who reads this I should say that the original boiler problem that I described turned out to be a dodgy link in the ring main that was adjacent the boiler, so it wasn't the boiler at all. The leg of the main seemed to go underground through concrete & may have water penetration or...

Mysterious RCD tripping & mysterious readings for a boil

Well what a day. Thanks for all the tips. Previously I've been unable to observe the problem myself, but today the problem was very clear as everytime I used the hall light switch a few times, the RCD went. I turned off all breakers on the RCD & the problem persisted with the RCD tripping with...

Mysterious RCD tripping & mysterious readings for a boil

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll be working on this tomorrow & will post how I get along.

Mysterious RCD tripping & mysterious readings for a boil

I would have thought somebody could shed light on why the RCD trips from light switch activity even though the lights aren't on the RCD......

Mysterious RCD tripping & mysterious readings for a boil

The Phase/neutral/earth were all disconnected from the CU during testing. I also only tested phase/earth and neutral/earth on the boiler voltage resistance test at 250v.

Mysterious RCD tripping & mysterious readings for a boil

Neutral/earth is the test I'm speaking of. Phase/earth was showing no fault. Phase/neutral was showing no resistance as expected.

Mysterious RCD tripping & mysterious readings for a boil

I've got a mysterious nuisance trip problem on an RCD & wonder if anyone can help? The light circuit isn't on the RCD, but about twice a week, the RCD is tripping when lights are switched. There is one main hallway light switch where it happens the most, but tonight it tripped when a bedroom...

What formal procedure for changing a consumer unit?

I bought a Megger 1502/2 for these jobs & hope to start the work in 2 weeks from now. But I'm still confused & I guess I'll find out from the council soon enough whether they'll be accomodating, or obstructive. My first intention was to joing NIC, but when I found out all of their...

What formal procedure for changing a consumer unit?

So if I'm reading you right - my understanding is correct, but the LABC may throw a few spanners in my spokes?

What formal procedure for changing a consumer unit?

So what would be the point of me hiring someone to certify the installation? My understanding is that my EAL certificate shows me to be competent, but that because I'm not registered with NIC or similar, I still need to inform building control. So my understanding then is that building control...

What formal procedure for changing a consumer unit?

The fuseboards have MCB's, but no RCD, so I believe there won't be a change. Do you agree?

What formal procedure for changing a consumer unit?

Thanks for the replies. It was the lecturers at the course who told me a new consumer unit triggers a periodic report. I do know a guy who is registered with NIC and has certified some work for me before, but he reckoned he wasn't the right man for periodic reports, so I haven't considered...
