What formal procedure for changing a consumer unit?

I've recently completed the EAL Intermediate Certificate for Domestic Installers. The work I want to do doesn't seem to justify me joining the NIC or other organisation as I've got 5 or 6 jobs in total to do on my own places. All I want to do is some bonding upgrades and changing some...

Expansion vessels / air in the system, a fair trade off?

Yes I changed the 5 year old pressure release valve when I saw it letting water out at 1.4 bar, but the brand new one was letting water out at 1.7 bar which isn't what it's rated to. It seems to me that there is a difference between a pressure build up and physical expansion of the water. If...

Expansion vessels / air in the system, a fair trade off?

It occured to me last week that an expansion vessel is simply a container of air allowing physical expansion of hot water in a sealed CH system. My faulty expansion vessel (now seems to be OK after I charged it with a bike pump) resulted in water leaking out of my system when the pressure was as...

Can I change my own boiler?

Having helped plumbers change about 6 or 7 combi boilers over the past few years & having seen how it is basically following a procedure which is helped by the installers instructions supplied by the manufacturers, I believe I can do it myself. So I am raising this question with you to...

    Jaguar combi boiler - sorry!!!!

Scoot I think I can help you with all of these problems. One of the threads you probably read was mine of a couple of weeks ago asking about my own Jaguar boiler. I managed to sort it all out with more than 50% of the credit to forum posters here. 1/ Your pressure has gone up to 2.9 because...

Gloworm Swiftflow 120 just clicking, no CH or HW

I'm with Powergen. Also, when this boiler was first installed I got a BG maintanance contract, but they cancelled it after the first year because they said the access to the boiler wasn't good enough as it's in a cupboard with solid walls either side.

Gloworm Swiftflow 120 just clicking, no CH or HW

I just realised that with the fan being so loud that if the fan is on bearings as mentioned by another poster above, that the bearings may have had it & may be restricting the speed the fan can run at. Does that sound right? The way this is going I think I'll use the bypassed boiler...

Gloworm Swiftflow 120 just clicking, no CH or HW

Hi, thanks for posting the above. Are you a dealer selling parts? Or a poor soul relying on these boilers like me? I arrived back at my place this afternoon. I opened up the old beast, located the air pressure switch and bypassed it with a screwdriver which got the boiler running. The fan...

Gloworm Swiftflow 120 just clicking, no CH or HW

Through Earl's Court from NW10 to SW11 it takes 30 mins as long as it's not peak traffic and as long as Chelsea isn't playing that day! Interesting tip on the WD10 though, thanks. Whatever the cause is, the fan isn't running at full throttle & it was until the fault surfaced.

Gloworm Swiftflow 120 just clicking, no CH or HW

Well it runs, then it slows & speeds up over & over in unison with what I believe is the air pressure switch clicking. My usual plumber says it's either the air pressure switch is faulty, or the fan is faulty. He wanted to change the switch & see if it fixed the problem (about £140 for labour...

    Persistant banging

As far as I understand it, that's your pipes expanding and the noise is probably the pipe against the joist under your floor or wherever the pipe is pressing against wood. It is possible to cure this problem by stuffing something soft & heat resistant between the pipe & the wood.

Bathroom hot water runs at a trickle

Your plumber may have also fitted a ball valve to the pipe feeding that tap, he may have forgotten to open the valve when the job was finished & that may be restricting the flow.

Hot water for 20 seconds - then lukewarm

I would also try turning down the tap a little to see if the water warms up at a slower flow rate. Your boiler may have the flow rate set to maximum which might allow the water through too quickly & therefore not allowing enough time to heat it as it passes through the boiler. If your water...

Gloworm Swiftflow 120 just clicking, no CH or HW

Well I managed to find a local guy available next week who says he doesn't do no fix - no fee because he is always able to fix it. He charges £50 + VAT an hour & says if it's the fan it'll probably cost about £200 in total. Does that sound right?

Gloworm Swiftflow 120 just clicking, no CH or HW

You're in NW10 right? It's not that far from SW11. I called off my own plumber yesterday afternoon because I didn't want him ordering parts I don't need. So I'm a bit stuck now even though a Glow-worm plumber I managed to contact last night said I should try knocking the casing around the...

Jaguar boiler losing pressure/replace expansion vessel?

Yeah I thought so too. It seems logical that the expansion vessel is part of the entire system and therefore could be located anywhere. The PRV is an independant part on this logic. So if you're not in Cuba, where are you?

    Valiant Combi Boiler not lighting

Does the pressure guage show water pressure in the boiler? About 1.0 is a standard cold pressure if all is OK on that front. But it sounds like it just needs topping up using the filling loop and the leaking radiator needs to be addressed.

Jaguar boiler losing pressure/replace expansion vessel?

Thanks mate. Do you recommend any particular tools, or just those in a normal tool box? And should I approach it from the top or the side?

    Air Blockage Downstairs Rad

I dealt with an air block for a friend myself last week & managed to flush it through simply by turning off one valve on every other radiator to get enough pump pressure from the boiler feeding to the one that wasn't heating. This flushed the airlock through quick smart (loads of bubbling as...
