    Ticking radiator

I've changed my feeble mind! I don't agree new rad, hope you haven't bought one! Didn't read what you said carefully enough. The problem occurs when you draw hot water. Therefore you look for which pipes get hot then to find where the problem is. You could cut out some copper pipe and replace...

    Problems Balancing Radiators

I think you need to carry on with the balancing, then go round again, and maybe again. Take your time to let things stabilise. If that rad still has an excessive drop, there isn't enough flow to it. Remedy is larger supply pipes, less elbows, machine made bends, higher pump speed. The sizing of...

    Storage heaters or regular radiators

If it's let out, presumably it might be empty in freezing conditions, so the risk of burst pipes goes up and insurer's might not want to pay. So I'd go for electric underfloor heating and charge the occupiers the higher cost, which won't be too bad for a short let. If it's a wet system you could...

    Cold water storage tank

Just a thought - you could get rid of the tank and replace it with a pressure vesssel which is much smaller and could go in a more suitable place. Can be complicated to do because you also have to fit a safety valve and drain. I am a bit confused that you say the hot water is direct from the...

    I agree. New rad.

    Add to Central Heating System

Sounds like you need to balance the system. You can do a search on this forum for that. To work out if the boiler is big enough, you should really caculate the load, which takes some time, although not actually difficult. You could buy a book, or get someone to do it for you. You could get an...

Programable roomstat a better bet ?

Concerning whether you leave the heating on 24/7. The heat loss (your bill!) depends on the temperature difference between inside and outside. The bigger the difference, the bigger the bill. Take the logic to an extreme - imagine you weren't at home for 6 months - do you think it would be...

    Whirlpool built in dishwasher

Thanks, people. I'll try all those ideas. I'm using 'Finish', which should be ok, I imagine, as it's the major brand in the shops.

    Hot water takes ages

If you are trying to supply just one remote tap, might it not be better to install an instantaneous electric heater in that location? The flow rates aren't usually great, but you'd stop wasting water and energy. If your hot water pipes are 22mm, you'd draw 2.5 litres compared to 1 litre if the...

Hot water in cold tap for 30 seconds

Look, it's the heating pipes not the hot water pipes. Hot water pipes aren't hot long enough to give this problem, and it would only happen when you'd drawn off hot water. If you have a hot water cylinder and the 3 port valve or whatever in an airing cupboard, have a good look there as the pipes...

    downside up?

It will only get hot at the top, that's why not!!!!! It would be ok if the flow is connected to the bottom and the return to the top, in fact 10% better than standard.

    Whirlpool built in dishwasher

Dear all I've got a Whirlpool dishwasher that I bought new 5 years ago, but hardly use because the results are so disappointing. Glasses come out a bit cloudy looking and china has a funny feel, your fingers won't slide across it smoothly. Stainless steel comes out with a white film. I've...

    Why only cold fill ??

Cold fill only because the hot water in your house could exceed the maximum temperature you want in the machine with modern low temperature powders. Why not look at Which magazine (free in the local library) before you choose? I'd suggest you look up 'brand reliability'.

Quick question....how long is your heating on in the winter?

Is he very tall, with short arms?? Does he stand furthest from the bartender? Perhaps you need to be in a warmer bedroom for a few nights?

Hot water in cold tap for 30 seconds

Not usually the hot water pipes, but the heating pipes touching the cold feed to the tap in question

    Cold Living Room

If your thermostatic valves are all wide open, it's hardly surprising. Turn down the lockshield, not the thermostatic valve in the dining room and any other room that overheats. It'll take several attempts over maybe a week to get it right. Then use the thermostatic valves as intended.eg if it's...

    Radiator thermometers...do they exist?

Local plumbers merchant. Probably shuts at midday Saturday. About £10-£15 each (you need two to balance a rad). Often inaccurate. I've got 4 that don't agree! or at least didn't until I tweaked them by slackening the small screws at the back and twisted the dial round. got them all agreeing at...

    BSP straight or taper?

The idea is that only one of the two has a taper, it doesn't matter which one. That way the joint goes tight when you wind them together. Straight with straight or taper with taper equals does'nt go tight therefore leaks!
