Very baffling damp problem - Help!!

Thing is John, if a french drain is installed then it might only be removing the problem from the surface down to, presumably, already damaged and saturated brickwork in the cellar wall(s)! Swings and roundabouts. Observation is req'd during a water test with say a hose pipe, and during...

Very baffling damp problem - Help!!

Spelching, perhaps a local name, for degrading brick face, similar to blowing. Your inside and outside lines of injection should be at the same level. By and large, injection is a waste of time - it does form a barrier of sorts for what it's worth. Inside render should be sand lime and...

Very baffling damp problem - Help!!

Do you have a solid inside floor? Or is the v. low air brick venting a sub-area? Why was DPC installed 2yrs ago? What is the relation in height of your internal floor to the extrnal injection line? DPC should be injected in the brickwork not the bed. Was a DPC injected internally...

    Chimney breast coming away

Carry on removing all coverings to expose brickwork - return on to your main wall and hack off plaster for 300mm. No propping is required. Remove all rubble as you work dont be clambering over it. Do not interfere with the plaster run coving at wall-ceiling. Come back with more photo's...

help with quality of work on roof part 2- bodges?

You can see the fascia and guttering behind the toe-board (correctly placed). There is no soffit. The roof appears to be humping at the dividing wall, hence kicking up the slates. The flashing and pointing is below standard. The mortar stains req removing and old lead appears to have been...

    2-4ml gap in boarded ceiling

Good nailing schedule. Given that your walls are rough, why not hack away a little at the top of the wall junction of board and wall to give the rag scrim a chance of a neat join?

    Can anyone recommend plastering course?

If you are in the building trade and have watched plasterer's at work, then why not set up a practice area at home and work away at it. Build a framing and use both sides of the board, practice render with 1:3 lime sand mix. College courses will req. time and expense for an NVQ.

rainwater gullies clogging up with moss - how to avoid?

Why the excessive roof debris? The roof is your first port of call - are your gutters clean? Fine mesh self made screens could be wired to the gulley grating/grids but you would still have to remove the debris every so often. Can you post pics?

Roof Guttering and conservatory guttering linking to

As usual, Masona has good, considered things to say. However, is there no way clubb that you can approach your neighbour and have the fence panels lifted? It will make the job so much easier. Pics of your whole rear elevation would help. You have mortar smears on the vertical abutment -...

    Leaking roof around chimneys PHOTOS

I didn't get all the photo's either. I agree that the white stuff is irrelevant - it's merely lead patina. The front apron appears to be lead burned (welded) to the "side flashings," not necessary, and suspect if that is the case. As has been noted its also badly installed and dressed...

    Leaking roof around chimneys PHOTOS

You really want to look "behind" the stack at the back gutter - 90% of chimney flashing problems are back gutter related. However, water test (gentle hose spray) the front apron the side flashings and the back gutter in turn. Observe results inside the loft. Only use roof a ladder and tie...

waste not draining - saniflow or not?

    1. Can't advise you on shower - could be dangerous advice. Shower is not the problem, it's the drainage. 2. Which way are your joists running? If drainage water is flooding the shower tray than you might consider calling in a plumber to consider a re-routing of the drainage. Given the...

    pointing for a woman

Norm and his TV ilk have as much in common with on site skills as Tommy Walsh's building trade knowledge. US construction unions train all their apprentices to a high standard, and the training is continuous thro a tradespersons career. Hence their pay and benefits take them up to...

Leaking roof near chimney and leaking around soil stack

You have to determine accurately and definitely, if possible, where exactly the roof leaks. If you inspect the roof, do it from a ladder - dont go on the roof. Have someone foot the ladder and tie it into the fascia. An option would be to cut the stack shy of the eaves and run it outside...

    pointing for a woman

Sarah Beeny had a woman learning to point on her DIY show tonight, on channel 4. No reason why you shouldn't point up. I take it that you'r working inside the roof loft on the inside brickwork. Perished interior pointing is never "serious", it's when interior brickwork is reqd that things get a...

    Woodworm ? Rot? or both?

Like the guys said, it's beetle damage and innocent chemicals on the brickwork. As suggested, do wrap the joist tails/ends where they sit in the brickwork - use strong plastic builders bags or DPC if any handy. Make sure that the short joists are firmly wedged or fixed in place at both...

waste not draining - saniflow or not?

From what i can make out you dont have any venting for your waste, and if you followed thro with your proposal to drop the shower waste down/by the chimney flue you will cause even more venting issues. Is the shower waste 2" and does that 2" waste continue out to the RWP/hopper head? Dont...
