Questions raised from first plaster attempt

Thanks again! The light isnt great..i have an inspection light i could hang closer for the remaining walls. The blemishes are more in the corners (which make sense given your explanation as my corner work needs improvement) Appreciate the quick feedback

Questions raised from first plaster attempt

One more Q (if you dont mind), I've done 3 walls now (gettting better), but as the walls are drying, small "dimples" appear in the dried plaster that werent there when i put the plaster on....they're not massive, but slight flat recesses. Is this normal? Should i skim over them?

Questions raised from first plaster attempt

Hi all, Ok so I tried my hand at plastering on the weekend and did my first wall...I learned from my mistakes pretty fast (first attempt at taking off the hawk just falling onto the floor), but I had some questions that I didn't have the answers for and was hoping someone could shed some light...

    Clearing chimney to stop draughts

Thanks, I'll go down the rock wool route for now as that seems like something I can do "today", then hopefully re-address the issue when we eventually come to use the fireplace again Hopefully this will solve the issue for now I appreciate the help and advice

    Clearing chimney to stop draughts

Apologies for the confusion. So do you suggest I should try some rockwool around the liner? What about the liner itself? If the heat loss is linked to the draughts then how would i stop the liner from being draughty?

    Clearing chimney to stop draughts

Its not so much the draught im concerned about as the loss of heat from the room.

    Clearing chimney to stop draughts

Are there plates designed for that purpose? Or is it something I would have to do myself?

    Clearing chimney to stop draughts

Hi, We recently moved into a new house. It had an electric fire hung over a void where I assume a fireplace used to be. I was looking at using something like a chimney plug to close off the gap but there is what appears to be a metal flue running up the inside of the chimney. Can /should this...

    Skimming walls/ceiling as a beginner

Thanks for the feedback everyone...for some reason i'd gone down a different route of which videos i was googling (as the video I'd first watched had a guy skimming with a knife). I've watched a fair few more videos now and will be going out to buy my equipment this weekend. I'll start off with...

Should I do the inside corners first? And should I buy a trowel for the inside corners? Appreciating all the help and feedback.

    Skimming walls/ceiling as a beginner

Is there an art to mixing? or is it just following instructions? I only ask as I've seen some premixed bags of thistle multi finish and some not...so was wondering which to get

    Skimming walls/ceiling as a beginner

Even if I'm not plastering? I was under the impression joint compound was easier to work with and takes longer to set than plaster so is easier for a beginner. You mention a hawk and trowel compared to a knife and pan.. It's that not preference? Is a trowel better for beginners skimming?

    Skimming walls/ceiling as a beginner

I'm fairly new to DIY and usually just fork out money to people better at it than me, however having just moved house i'm pretty skint and am looking to do some of the work myself. Our living room was pretty garish and we stripped the wallpaper off that and the hall/stairs but it's left some...
