Raft foundation - do I need to underpin?

Yeah, Raft is probably the wrong terminology? What I have is what JohnD has suggested, a slab with a thickened edge. I'm guessing it was built that way to save the costs, the original portion of the garage is on standard strip foundations roughly 1.5m deep (exposed some of this when digging...

Raft foundation - do I need to underpin?

From what you guys are saying and to be honest what I thought myself is it's a bit of a lash up. I think the easiest solution for me would be to take it down and rebuild on proper strip footings like the other side of the garage, it's only single brick construction and I should be able to clean...

    Temporary gravel drive

If it really is only for 2-4 months I would think that solution would be a waste of money. Why not just chuck down a few 8x4 sheets of ply? it won't last long term but would be fine for a few months to stop the cars sinking into the grass.

Raft foundation - do I need to underpin?

I've a garage which was originally a single but has been doubled in size in the past (early 1980's) The new section was built on a raft foundation which seems to be roughly 20cm deep at the edges, the slab has cracked and one corner has moved slightly, I suspect due to a rainwater downpipe...

Alternative to chainsaw for smaller branches?

Silky Gomtaro 300 or a Silky BigBoy 360. Would recommend either of the above, I have both and use them for clearing wind fallen trees on trails in my local forest. The largest trunk I've cut so far is probably three foot. I did previously use a bow saw but there is just no comparison.

How do I fit a sunken mat in engineered oak floor?

I used a Mat Well/Recess made by Quickstep. Pre built aluminium frame and good quality rubber backed mat. has been down 6 or so years and still looks as new, not see any water ingress when the mat has been out for cleaning.

Block Paving Sinking - what action to take?

I do, 1972 Mk3 with a V8 motor, it lives in the garage though ;) Will try and get some photos of the sinking when it's light. It is actually more towards the house where the drive has sunk, the front half of the drive nearest the road is fine! Only in the areas under the wheels, no ruts etc.

That quantity went it, compacted in layers with a whacker.

Block Paving Sinking - what action to take?

Not a cash job, nor the cheapest quote. The sub base was 150mm of Type 1, the depth is correct as I saw it going in. The ground is fairly heavy clay. The sand thickness sounds about right, not sure on the type of sand that was used, bit it is coarse. The sinking seems to be where the tyres of...

Block Paving Sinking - what action to take?

I had a block paved driveway installed at the start of the year that has started to sink and crack the edges off blocks as it does, in the areas where the car wheels tend to end up. I've had the installer back (eventually) and he claims to have rectified the few areas where it had dropped, It's...

Walls built off concrete slab - possible to replace slab?

I don't believe the slab has moved in my time of ownership, and nothing new has developed. The main reason for wanting to redo the slab is the old portion of the garage looks like it was finished with an artexing trowel. I also wasn't sure if adding anything on top of the existing slab would...

Walls built off concrete slab - possible to replace slab?

My detached garage was originally a single, with conventional foundations for the walls. At some point in the 1980's the garage was doubled in size, a slab was cast next to it, the walls were built directly off the slab and tied into the original structure. Both slabs are now cracked in...

    Plumbers - Which toilet?

Need a new one for my downstairs bog. The last couple i've fitted in previous houses have been aesthetically pleasing but the build quality has left a lot to be desired, particularly the seats which kept moving no matter how tight the blind fixings were done up. Any suggestions on a decent...

    New handrail/spindles - which material?

I'm going to be replacing the Handrail/Spindles/Baseplate in my house, currently it's got the 70's horizontal rail style setup which looks turd. I'm intending on just painting it all white, on that basis what would you suggest I use material wise. Pine seems the obvious choice or would I be...

Another 1930's no felt roof question

Sounds very similar to my old place, never leaked and most of the mortar/back pointing had dropped out. Think it is there to stop dust/draughts in the loft space rather than water. I stapled tyvec (Because I had a roll spare) to the insides of the rafters all the way round. Seemed to do the...

Best way to clear up after plastering?

I've used a Garden Hoe in the past to remove the larger stuff, saves crawling round on your hands and knees with a scraper.

    Bad tarmac job?

Hmmm, just kind of expected better for £1100 really. I've only paid half to date which gives me a bit of leverage on the Council I guess.
