    Open fire in existing fireplace

Looking through the Part J regulations, it says that J1-J3 only apply to "fixed combustion appliances". Is a fire basket a fixed combustion appliance? If not, it seems the only relevant item is J4 (Provision of information). Does this mean we have to pay for an installer to stick a label on the...

    Open fire in existing fireplace

We recently bought a house that has a fireplace opening with a constructional hearth. We have had the chimney cleaned and smoke tested. We would like to place fireboard around the inside of the fireplace opening, lay a new outer and inner hearth and use a fire basket for an open fire. The fire...

    Front door locking mechanism

Yes the front door has a pad and handle, but now works in the same way as the other two doors which have two handles. The front door has the letters GU on the lock so I think it is made by Gretsch-Unitas Ltd.

    Front door locking mechanism

Hello We moved house about 6 months ago. The house we moved into has three external UPVC doors that appear to have the same type of locks/handles. When we moved in the two back doors were locked and unlocked by first lifting up the handles and then turning the key. The front door behaved like...

Second Hand or Cheap Electrical Goods

I wonder what percentage of electric shocks lead to serious injury and death. As a child I had at least two electric shocks from mains electricity, but apart from jolting my arm back and scaring (not scarring!) me they had no lasting effects.

    Light in shed

Ok, please explain how I can do a proper DIY job (that won't end up costing more than getting an electricain to do it)

    Light in shed

Because the regulations don't allow me to do a proper job myself and I can't afford to get an electrician to do it. It would appear they are in this case.

    Light in shed

[/url] Apparently you can connect commando plugs to SWA cable and you can get commando socket to household plug adapters so that would seem to be one option, but I will speak to the electricians about laying the cable myself. I would still like to know what rules/regulations I would be...

    Light in shed

Could I then use a non-armoured cable to connect them?

    Light in shed

I've had quotes from electricians to put a socket and a fixed light in the shed and they would charge £150-£250, so the alternative would be to run a standard extension lead out of the kitchen window, across the lawn to the shed which is not very safe but perfectly legal. Are you saying it is...

    Light in shed

I want to put a light in a garden shed. I am thinking of buying a length of armoured cable, run it from the house, under the floor through a trench in the garden to the shed and then put a plug on the house end and a socket on the shed end to plug a light into. In effect it is like a fixed...

    Outbuilding roof garden

Hello We are considering buying a terraced house that has a very steep sloping rear garden. It is similar to the picture for number 2 "sloping natural ground level" in the following link...
