    Fitting insulated plasterboard

I've just insulated my back bedroom by taking most of the ceiling down and putting 50mm Xtratherm batts between the joists/rafters. I'm now intending to put up 40mm insulated plasterboard to increase the insulation. The bedroom's directly under a pitched roof and from the top of the inside...

    Best 50mm insulation material

Thanks again for all the advice I've had on here. I bought two sheets of Xtratherm and I intended to put them between the joists/rafters by sliding them down into place from the loft. A couple of the lads on here (freddymercurystwin, SNM, regsmyth ...) advised me (quite correctly as it turned...

    Best 50mm insulation material

Jeds, yes there will be a 50mm gap between the insulation boards and the roofing felt. (The other lads seem to be saying that there should also be a vapour control layer underneath the boards above the plasterboard.)

    Best 50mm insulation material

The ceiling slopes up from the eaves for slightly less than 2 metres and then levels out. So I'll be cutting the boards to something less than 2 metres and then sliding them in from the loft. The reason I've decided to put up another ceiling under the existing one using insulation backed PB...

    Best 50mm insulation material

Noseall, thanks for that. Since the insulation boards are only 50mm and the recommended depth for full insulation is much more, I was thinking of putting up another ceiling under the present one using insulation backed PB. I presume that that this would have its own VCL as you call it. Do you...

    Best 50mm insulation material

Conflicting advice there but thanks for the input fellahs. Bits that I've read on the internet and things that I've seen on youtube don't give me a clear answer either, but I think I'm going to just put the insulation boards in and patch the ceiling up and get it replastered. From what I've...

    Best 50mm insulation material

The insulation boards I've ordered are Xtratherm (I only need two). Should I be putting a vapour barrier underneath them? I'm hoping that that's not necessary because it would mean I'd have to take the whole ceiling down, whereas all I need to do now is slide the boards down between the joists...

    Best 50mm insulation material

What I meant was that as I've never put up any PB before, the angles at the edges might well be not the best. But I don't see why I can't cut some PIR insulation to the width of my joists and slide it in - how difficult is that? As far as I'm concerned that's the easy bit.

    Best 50mm insulation material

Thanks for that advice. Mind, with my DIY skills I don't think the finessing of the angles at the edges will be my main worry!

    Best 50mm insulation material

Thanks for that - I get it now. But rather than take down the existing ceiling and PB I think I'll go with the earlier suggestion ie. put insulation in through the section I've already cut out of the ceiling and then put up a new ceiling of insulation backed PB under the existing ceiling. Does...

    Best 50mm insulation material

Thanks but I don't really understand what you mean. You say 'take down all the PB on the sloping part' and then 'insert 50mm between joists'. But if I've taken the PB down, what's the 50mm insulation going to rest on? Or am I missing something here?

    Best 50mm insulation material

The ceiling is about 8ft x 7ft (the 7ft bit sloping down). I can insulate the first foot or so of the 7ft from the loft but then it becomes inaccessible from the loft so I've cut a foot wide section out of the sloping ceiling going right across the whole 8ft. From here I can push in the...

    Best 50mm insulation material

So it would be a sort of double ceiling with 30-40mm insulation between the two sections of plasterboard? I'm not sure if my DIY skills would be up to that. So the plasterboard nails would have to go through two lots of PB and the insulation into the joists?

    Best 50mm insulation material

Can't do that - the ceiling plasterboard is just 4 inches from the roof felt.

    Best 50mm insulation material

Thanks for that. I looked at Aerogel but, as you say, very expensive. I figured it would cost me a few hundred pounds for a tiny back bedroom!

    Thaks for that, mate.

    Best 50mm insulation material

I am insulating above the ceiling of my back bedroom. The ceiling slopes down and there is only 4 inches between the ceiling plasterboard and the roof felt above. Since I have to leave 2 inches for air flow, this means I can only put in 2 inches (50mm) of insulation so I'm wondering what the...

Repair tiny slits in roof felt

Thanks to noseall and dhutch - I'll give the duck tape a miss and go instead with the polythene and Sticks Like Sh*t. Appreciate your help.

Repair tiny slits in roof felt

Yeah - I think I knew that but I'd forgotten about it. That's cheered me up actually - now I'm pretty sure I won't have a problem. But I'll still make doubly sure with the duck tape, as you suggest. Thank you very much.

Repair tiny slits in roof felt

So I'd be sticking it on the underside of the roof felt. Would it be watertight if any did seep through?
