A lot depends on the following:- Is the property going to be occupied during rewire - i.e. furnished and lived in as clearing up and safely replacing floorboards, carpet etc at the end of each day takes time and effort as well as restoring mimimal power. Most expensive Is the property...

    Battery help

Dave12 What is the battery used for on the boat? Is it a motor boat or sail boat? If it is a 'engine starting' battery it can be used on the car during the winter. Hoowever, if it is a 'domestic' deep cycle battery it will be killed by the car battery system. Deep cycle batteries need...

Mother In Law Shower Upgrade Concern

Macman I suggest you speak to the bathroom fitter and get him to sort it out at his expense before you get another sparky in. After all your MIL employed the guy to carry out the work and it should be done properly and in accordance with electrical and building regs. However, I think she...

    iron keeps tripping RCD

My Grandma had a superb cordless iron. You put it on the open fire or gas ring until it was hot enough - she used to spit on it and if it hissed it was at the right temperature.

    wiring a plug!

WTF are they wiring 13A plugs for in a Science class, much better to be making Tesla coils, using a vander graaf generator and the wimshurst machine. And I suppose it's too dangerous to use a magnet, a 9V battery and a dish of mercury to make an electric motor!

    Hot Tubs

Instal for Hot Tub is same rules as swimming pools. Also you may need to use earth rod, depending on earthing arrangements at supply & length of cable run. Look up perceived voltage in the regs. The last tub I did was rated at 38A

Tingle from Dishwasher + light switch

I think the reply JohnD gave was straight to the point. The earth wire is there for a purpose not merely for decoration. Luckily for you and yours you just got a tingle THIS time not an electric shock or worse!

    17th Edition RCD Protection

I think what will determine the CU configuration will be the bottom line cost to comply with 17th. In an ideal world each cct on RCBO would be the best solution IMO but at £25 per cct it makes it an expensive exercise. In most domestic CU upgrades all ccts will require RCD protection as in...

    Fitting new electric shower

Just a thought have you thought how your upstairs lighting circuit cable gets to the loft space from the CU? Bet it's not run on the outside wall. A competent electrician will be able find the best route for a cable to a shower without resorting to running outside and back in again..

    concreate ceiling problem

Wow a mortgage provider with electrical installation expertise!!! I guess it was a survey report - but perhaps you need to get an electician in to confirm that a rewire is really required. By whom?

Swap RCD and Main Switch in consumer unit

Not necessarily as you could replace the tails with new ones that would be long enough to reach meter. But use a service connector (henley) to join the new and old tails. Then call your electricity provider to connect new tails to meter.
