    Buying a table saw

I was sold on the Kity until I saw the new Sheppach recently. It has been introduced as a cheaper option because the other Sheppach table saws have been upgraded with cast iron tables. The choice is now between the Kity419, Sheppach ts2010 or the Electra Beckum PK200. They are all a similar...

    Overgrown garden

Because of the way bindweed (convolvulus) propagates from every bit of root left then digging will never get rid of it. Using a glyphosate systemic weedkiller is the only way to be sure of killing it. This should be done in the growing season so that it carries the glyphosate down to the roots...

    CHOPSAW STOP

I made my chop saw extension from 18mm plywood with a back fence set in line with the saw fence and a base height exactly level with the saws base. I use a temporary stop with a small piece of hardwood with a screw for fine adjustment which is held in place with a small G clamp. Rutlands sell...

    Buying a table saw

Both the Kity419 and the Sheppach TS2010 are good table saws. Since Kity was taken over by Sheppach this year they are both imported by NMA (agencies) Ltd Both have induction motors so will last longer with no brushes to replace. At the moment the TS2010 is on offer by NMA at £699 and for a...

anyone used pathmate type garden concrete moulds ????

Removing a mould before the concrete has cured is likely to lead to the slab breaking. Even if you are careful the edges are likely to be less than perfect. I've never used plastic moulds but have made a number of concrete slabs using timber moulds including circular slabs withthe mould made...

    Gravel Path

One thing to note about a loose gravel path is that you will hear it crunching underfoot when anyone walks on it. This should alert you to anyone approaching the house. Burglars hate being announced like that. ;) Annual weeds seed readily in gravel but can be pulled out easily or give it a...

knackered old hinge screws just melt under the screwdriver

Paint stripper is highly caustic and removed any natural oil in the wood that gives its character and is a natural preservative. There are some non caustic strippers but these are expensive. Have a look on some of the TV shopping channels for Ready Strip which is approx £40 for half a gallon...

    Gravel flower bed: tips

A polythene sheet with prevent the rain passing through causing the gravel to get water logged and possibly start smelling from the stagnant water. A proper weed suppresor membrane will allow the water through and allow air through to the soil keeping it healthy. You could plant into the soil...

    wild weed

You'll get glyphosate at any garden centre or DIY shed that deals with gardening. Roundup is a trade name but many sell their own brand glyphosate weedkillers a lot cheaper. I bought some in my local Tesco last week under their own brand name. The area I used it on is changing from green to...

    Need help with pine plywood...

I doubt very much whether lincoln or wagon wheels would hold boards together. All compressed beech biscuits are under 4mm but swell up with the moisture in the glue making a tight joint. They should be stored in an airtight container preferably with a bag of silica gel to prevent moisture in...

knackered old hinge screws just melt under the screwdriver

A plug cutter could be used around the screw but you are unlikely to be able to drill to full depth. You just have to make sure you use a large enough plug cutter to clear the screw. You then have to find a plug or dowel that matches the outside diameter instead of the inside as normal.

knackered old hinge screws just melt under the screwdriver

Maz I spent 30 years in a tool room and the most hated job was trying to remove broken bolts. Fortunately they were usually 1/2" or 12mm which gave enough room to drill a hole for a screw extractor but this was not always possible. Removing a broken tap was even worse and after spending ages...

    Need help with pine plywood...

All biscuit cutting blades are the same diameter and kerf (thickness. 100mm dia and 4mm thick. Yo can get a router cutter for cutting biscuit slots but as the diameter is smaller you have to cut it a bit longer than just a plunge cut. I use both depending on what I am doing at the time.

A bench jointer is a plane with a large bed and fence for planing timber straight and square. A plate (biscuit) jointer cuts slots in wood when joining one piece to another with compresses beachwood biscuits and glue, used when edge joining timber to make a wide board i.e. table tops. The...

Yes BA you use it during your private romantic moments. You smear it on the bedroom door handle to keep the kids out. :P

    Buying a table saw

Both the SIP and the Record are cast iron table saws but neither comes with a sliding carriage. They are heavyweight machines and need a large workshop. For about £700 saws with sliding carriages and extension tables for wider ripping would be the Sheppach 2010, Electra Beckum PK200 and the...

knackered old hinge screws just melt under the screwdriver

Those screw extractors are unlikely to be any good as the smallest is 1/8" and has to be screwed into a small hole you drill into the screw. The threads are the opposite to normal screws and bolts so when you turn them to undo the screw the extractor bites into the hole holding it tighter the...

    Need help with pine plywood...

If you make enough things from pine the cost of a cheap bench jointer and a plate joiner (biscuit jointer) soon makes it worth the cost along with much better looking pieces. I never buy just what they have at the timber yard. I sort through it for knot free pieces and only buy those. I build...

    Need help with pine plywood...

Two prolems with buying laminated pine is the high price and you can see every stip that was laminated. Joining your own boards is far cheaper and looks better as you can match the boards to make them look like a single board width. This looks a lot better on furniture and especially table tops.

    Asbestos garage roof?

I bought a garage with similar roofing sheets in 1994 but they were not made from asbestos. These days the sheets are made from a cement based concrete mixture containing fibres for strength.
