    Need help with pine plywood...

As big all says, wide pine boards are more likely to cup. If you get 7 or 8 inch wide boards it's better to rip them down the middle, sometimes removing an inch or so from the middle then jointing the edges before glueing them together to make a coffee table top. Alternate the grain pattern to...

    barbeque ideas

The most unusual barbequeue I have seen was made from the end of a petrol tanker. This made a huge dish in which the burgers etc were cooked. This was on a very large caravan site where they had also made a motorised spit when they did an ox roast once a month. No chance of being hungry...

    Buying timber

I have 3 woodyards in a row on the same road. I mentioned about Wickes prices to the boss of the one I use most and he laughed saying that their lowest quality timber was much better than the stuff Wickes sold and that they would never consider stocking such rubbish. 'Only worth using for pit...

    Liverwort Major problem

Glyphosate systemic weedkiller such as Roundup or any of the other brands or cheaper own brand ones available from most DIY sheds or garden centres. Water it or spray it onto the green part of a plant and it is taken down to the roots where it kills the plant.

You could use metpost repair spikes. These are knocked into the existing concrete where the old post was, sawn off at ground level.

    fencing on a slope

For a fence on a slope I would allow each post to be 3 foot longer than the panel. 2 foot in the ground and a foot above the panels to allow for stepping. Around here an 8' post is likely to be cheaper than 6' or 7' ones so could be cut to length after the fence is completed.

    Tomato terminology

To increase the number of plants. After pinching out any side shoots place them in multi purpose compost. They will root giving you a lot more plants. One year I bought 3 tom thumb plants in the spring and grew them in a basket in the garage. By planting some of the pinched side shoots I had...

Erecting wooden lap fence and posts, help!

Its been found that fence posts rot much quicker in concrete than if set with gravel under and concrete above or even just filled with soil. Water cannot drain out if the post is encased in concrete.

New Kids Playhouse requires a base ??

When my kids had a playhouse it was just laid on part of the garden that was flat with western red cedar bearers against the ground. It lasted until they grew out of it, years later, when it was then used as a large kennel for 2 alsatians.

    Cutting Baseboards

The reason noone answered you is probably the difference in the language. The term 'baseboard' is not known here. It is known as skirting board. You should be sure the corners are exactly 90° as very few are. You mitre the outside corners by cutting each piece exactly half of the corner...

    lawn advice

I'm on solid blue clay and only raked the top level then covered in turf. Drainage trenches were later dug along the far half of the garden which had no turf. A few years later I used a fork every 4-6" on the lawn then brushed in sharp sand and at other times peat. Put the fork in 6-9" and...

    Forstner bits

No difference. They are just different names for the same tool. I believe that a drill press is the American term and pillar drill is the English term. I used pillar drills at work for many years and never heard the term drill press until watching an America woodworking programme on TV.
