    Router Table

Many routers no longer have a rocker on/off switch for safety. Some, like trend sell attachments to hold the switch on for table use. A lot of people overcome this by taping the switch on so the router is switched on with the NVR switch on the table. DONT forget to remove the tape, or...

    Play Matting

Different things sell at different times of the year. DIY sheds/garden centres sell it off cheaply to get rid of it to make room for things that are more likely to sell at that time. This is when I buy it, never at full price.

Rock dust - fab for garden, could stop global warming

The only reason I can see of rock dust helping is that it aerates the soil giving bacteria a better environment in which to thrive. Soil is a mixture of rock dust from erosion and decomposed animal and vegetable matter. Volcanic ash contains a great deal of minerals so therefore improves...

Where to by paving and a drainage question...

I have a brook forming my bottom garden border and when the house was built the builders bulldozed the road and piled the soil in a huge mound between the road and the brook. This pile was leveled when the houses were sold. The land is blue clay so the original topsoil was below 2'-3' of clay...

    Play Matting

One thing to have a look for when emptying the bag of bark chips is that there are often a few stones in them. I get mine from one of the large DIY/garden centre sheds and the bark is scaped off the ground when filling the bags and a few granite stones get in. It only needs a quich fork over...

Sand for lawn aeration - sharp or not?

Why no No 2s? Before water closets were used it was normal in the country for 'night soil' to drop straight in a pit outside the houses and was then transferred to different trenches around the gardens. This was always in the fallow land so a 4 crop cycle was used with the manure trenches left...

    Play Matting

The play area I set aside for my kids swings, climbing frames etc had a 6" layer of bark chips so they didn't land on hard ground. The bark had a few bags added each year. By the time they gre up enough to no longer use the kids toys the area had the lower layers rotted into the soil enough to...

    Play Matting

They used that matting in car parks at local beauty spots so the place looked lush with grass but had the soil protected by the matting.

Sand for lawn aeration - sharp or not?

They have been telling gardeners about using a peat substitute instead of denuding the peat bogs since Geoff Hamilton presented Gardeners World. Unfortunately there is nothing that works as well as peat. The closest is composted coconut husks but the more we use here the less goes back into...

Sand for lawn aeration - sharp or not?

My lawn is on solid blue clay. I improved the growth an ddrainage by forking it all over then brushing a mixture of sharp sand and peat with more sand that peat. A couple of years of this and the lawn now drains well even after heavy rain. I also mixed sharp sand with the soil in the flower...

    JOINING CONTIBOARD(MELAMINE FACED CHIPBOARD)

I've made many items from bookcases to wardrobes out of contiboard and always screwed the corners then covered the screw heads with caps of the right colour. After finding that the drilling and screwing was seldom accurate I made a jig to cover up to 36" wide boards with holes at 3" intervals...

    no flowers on mock orange

You should prune the Philadelphus after it was supposed to flower. Flowers would grow on shoots grown the previous year. Similar to forsythia which you prune after flowering so flower buts are encouraged rather than wood which is produced if you prune in the autumn-spring.

    Pruning a mature bramley

I know this is a little late but it may help others. Pruning any apple tree between autumn and spring is done to produce growth and shape. Light summer pruning induces fruit buds for the following year.
