    Memorial plaque onto concrete

If the slab is only 12"x12" why not make your own reinforced with some chicken wire folded so it fits inside the 12"x12"? I've made both square and round slabs this way for various parts of the garden. Simple to make and stronger than bought ones. The round ones were made from 2" wide strips...

    stripping Oak kitchen unit doors

If you dont mind the cost you could try Ready Strip available from TV shopping channels. At over £40 including p&p it's a bit pricey but wont harm the wood and will remove many coats of paint or varnish. Ready Strip at Shopsmart I have an old chest of drawers with over 80 years of paint...

    Any tips for routing?

alfietinker Routing the grooves for a drainer is fairly simple. You just need a bit of MDF to use as a template. (I'd use 12mm mdf) Most routers come with a bush for template following. By clamping a straight edge to the MDF you route a stopped slot to the width of the bush. Do this a few...

    bending wood any tips!

Should you decide to make a steaming chamber to bend the wood you need a jig to bend and clamp it to while the wood sets. As wood has a tendency to straighten slightly the bending jig needs to be a sharper curve than the finished article. I'd prefer a steel tube instead of plastic because of...

    Router set up for joints

One thing I have considered when making half housings accross the middle of a piece is to get a couple of extra fence bars and crank them so the fence is above the workpiece. This would allow you to use a straight edge to follow then use the micrometer fence screw to open up the slot until it...

    Trend Routersketch

It works the same way as a pantograph. You move the tool keeping an eye on the pointer to follow your sketch.

    PVA adhesive

I always found Evostick somewhat expensive but used it for years. Once I needed a lot more than before so I tried Humbrol which is about half the price. I noticed little difference in performance. Now I use an unknown brand PVA from my local woodyard which is cheaper still and works just as well.

    Dewalt Router 626 (advice please)

Nice to see someone buy a Good router as the first purchase. I dont think you will regret getting that model. All DeWalt routers use the same bushes etc as the Trend. The 626 wouldnt be listed as its new compared with its older brother the 625. 1/2" shank bits should keep their edge longer...

    Walls too hard to drill

A word of warning if you try a cobalt drill bit. They will drill almost any material except glass but the word is DRILL. Dont use hammer action. Thats like hitting the bit in with a hammer which breaks the material instead of drilling into it.

    soil

I used to go round every autumn collecting leaves that had fallen and the council would have to remove anyway. I also had permission to pick up leaves in the parks. I had a 6x3 bin made out of old fence panels. By adding more every few days as the process started I would end up with 2 cubic...

    Tomatoes

Many years ago someone gave my father 12 tomatoe plants. We had tomatoes all summer til autumn. Before the frost got them he picked all the green tomatoes and roled each in neaspaper to stop them touching and put them in drawers in a cool room. Apart from the dozens of kilner jars full of...

    soil

My soil is all clay and I went to make a flower bed. I dug out all the clay soil and piled it besided the house I mixed it with equal quantities of sharp sand and peat and sieved it through a frame I made to cover a wheelbarrow. The sieve mesh was the square garden mesh you can buy at many...

    Tree Stumps

Many trees dont die when they are felled. Just look where there were loads of elm trees before the Dutch elm disease killed them 30 years ago. New elms grow from the original roots but unfortunately they are unable to reach maturity. The disease (fungal) kills them after 15 years and the...

Why cant I use 45 degree mitres for fitting skirting boards?

You cut a mitre on one piece for the internal scribe then use a coping saw to follow the shape at a steeper angle. The other piece is just straight. When joined they look like a perfect mitre but get over the problem of movement which you would see if you made an internal mitre on both pieces.

    Sharpening Twist Drills?

I've tried these drill grinding kits and none could sharpen them as good as I do freehand. I've known some who worked on large radial arm drills who were never able to sharpen their drills correctly so would ask someone else to do it for them. For drills under 1/2" they would get a new one out...

    Router cutter quality issues

2 weeks ago Aldi had routers at £16 as a weekly special. Before they had them in they had some 12 piece TC boxed sets at £4.99 for a couple of weeks. When the routers went on sale most of the bits had gone. I bought a few sets. They may be cheap and nasty but are OK to get you out of a hole...

    Rotten Apples

Apples that go brown on the tree need removing. Windfalls too. Its's fungal infection that can spread to other fruits. The apple tree I have spread the infection to a victoria plum so the plums went brown and mouldy the following year. Windfalls will leave the spores in the earth so they...
