I'm not in the (or any) "trade", but I'd have to agree with this. Why are you getting involved? This is a problem between your client and their neighbour. If I were to ask you to do this job and the next door neighbour kicked up a stink, I wouldn't expect you to sort it out - that would be...

Bumble Bees - not quite "In The Garden"

I'm putting this in the Garden section as it's about bees and I think it's the best place for it, but the question is not particularly about the Garden at all. I have a veritable army of big bumbly bees coming and going from an air brick (underfloor ventilation - Victorian terrace) - fat...

Written estimate for small claims action

Do you have any form of written contract with him? Were there any terms and conditions provided along with a written quote? If so do they contain anything about cancellation after acceptance of the quote and or commencing work? Not that a written contract has any more standing in a legal...

Have they really dumbed Maths down

ITV docutainment about GCSE vs O levels: https://www.itv.com/itvplayer/tonight/series-17/episode-24-putting-gcses-to-the-test-tonight I can't say I'm convinced by Gove's plan to move back to completely exam based assessment as opposed to exam + coursework. To my mind, exams are necessary...

Have they really dumbed Maths down

Ohhhh - that brought a memory back - there were some log tables at the back of the test papers I sat. I'd definitely need a week or so refreshing my mind before sitting those same papers now, I think it's all still in there, just dusty and covered in cobwebs from lack of use. :D

Have they really dumbed Maths down

I assumed there must have been some cherrypicking going on. I was in the very first GCSE year and the questions were pretty much like the O level questions in that article plus some differential and quadratic stuff if I remember correctly. There were certainly some mandatory and "answer two of...

Have they really dumbed Maths down

100% :D The O level ones definitely took longer - mostly thanks to having to remember how to do them, stuff I haven't done for about 25 years.

    Five bins

They all go to landfill anyway? Not around here, they have a different wagon for collecting the recyclables with different compartments for the contents of each of the 3 recycling tubs. Having them all as wheelie bins does seem completely insane. 2 bins 3 boxes is OK. 5 bins per house is...

    Five bins

What's the problem with it? It's been that way round these parts for years now, it's no particular hassle. Grey bin - general waste for landfill Green bin - cardboard, garden cuttings etc., uncooked food waste 3 tubs: a. Paper b. Cans + plastic containers c. Glass The 3 tubs are...

IP Addresses thread - strangely turns to a God thread!

The ISP keeps logs of which customer was using what IP address at any given time. TalkTalk will have these records going back years. Technically they could provide these logs for your friend detailing every IP address he's ever been assigned and when, whether you can practically get them to do...

best tape to use to stick newspaper over windows in heatwave

How about incorporating some foil into the design to reflect the sun's rays away and temporarily dazzle passing motorists too? :D

    Solar Energy photo voltaic panels

While I recognise this is a resurrected zombie thread - as it has now popped to the top of the list anyway I thought I'd pick up on some of the earlier posters' comments about the cost implications to everybody of these initiatives. Only because it is fresh in my mind having read an article...

    uneven brake pad wear

Ewww, that's gnarly! You may still get that upper one out, but not with one of those right-angle allen keys, they tend to slop about to all kinds of angles when you apply a lot of pressure chewing up the head in the process. You really need an allen bit socket, something along the lines of...

    uneven brake pad wear

Heat and a good quality impact driver with suitable bit (impact bits are differently constructed), or a 24" breaker bar. Rather than hitting that allen key with a hammer you would be better off sliding a longer piece of pipe over it to gain more leverage - but more than likely the key will...

Would the UK put up with a corporation that did this?

Huh? Care to share what relevance you think a 75 year old US scandal has to the current state of affairs in the UK?

    Random damp patch

Pop round and speak to the neighbour and see if you can find out what is on the other side of the wall. Had a similar problem in a Victorian terrace here caused by a tiny pinholed pipe behind studwork on the other side of the party wall that had soaked the brickwork over time.

IP addresses and remote device access

No worries, I've set this stuff up so many times over the years I've lost count :)

IP addresses and remote device access

Oh - one last thing. With a lot of DSL routers (not sure about the hub specifically), once you've setup the dynamic DNS and port forwarding you can't actually test it from a device attached to the router / hub itself. The router point blank refuses to route traffic from one device on the...

IP addresses and remote device access

Only the router's IP address will change when you reconnect to the internet. Typically the IPs assigned to the devices attached to the router will only change if you turn them off for a time and power them up in a different order to previously. Hence the need to use DHCP reservations (or...

IP addresses and remote device access

I've used both NoIP and DynDNS before - they are really easy to setup, particularly if your router has the functionality to use those services (a lot of DSL routers do). Have a look through your router's configuration pages and see if you can find any dynamic DNS settings - if present it will...
