I suspect that this is a task beyond your skills (based on your questions) Poorly fitted stair carpets can KILL! They need to be fitted securely! ..............and those are just two of the many potential problems!

There is a cold "vinyl welding adhesive" on the market! Basically it "melts" and therefore adheres the "edges" of vinyl flooring I have had my (experienced) fitters use this on several/numerous jobs.......... ........with very nixed results, and always an obvious join!!!! Sorry, Best...

YES - it matters! carpet fitted to stairs needs to have the pile fitted in the correct orientation otherwise it wears out REALLY quickly hessian backed carpet SHOULD be fitted over underlay - otherwise it wears out REALLY quickly hessian backed carpet should be fitted onto gripper to...

Get a professional in to measure up and estimate.......... waste from the landing cut outs are used for the stairs..... a good estimator will work out a "cutting plan" that leaves hardly any waste - apart from normal trimmings

In my 35year plus experience as a flooring retailer...... ..........filling with anything is a waste of time, money and effort! The only reliable fix is to lift and re-lay all the boards and then fill in the resultant gap at the opposite edge to that which you started to re-lay the boards...

Why do you want to lay it yourself? carpet fitters are usually arranged by the "materials" supplier - the carpet shop! I used to retail up north and fitters got paid the same rate (£2.50m2) regardless of what they laid. If you lay it yourself the fitters will love you, but can you lay it...

6mm ply is better and usually cheaper........
