    I would seal the vents temporarily with clingflim just for the winter. You might end up with mold spots on the ceiling and walls. Do any permanent work in the spring.

    If you leave a void behind the fire the some of the heat will simply gravitate backwards then up the chimney. Vermiculite is effectively insulation. Ordinary red bricks are fine.
