Stop sink overflow pipe trapping water and getting smelly

Hi Sooey, I have swapped the sink wastes and all is almost well. The overflow seems in a much better configuration now, and I hope it won't accumulate waste water. I do have a problem though with re-sealing the wastes to the sinks. When I removed them there was some black residue between...

Stop sink overflow pipe trapping water and getting smelly

Sooey - I think you are right. Is it easy to remove and replace those sink waste fittings? I feel competent to take apart the rest of the sink pipe-work but have never removed a sink plug waste fitting. Unfortunately, in an earlier attempt to take out the U (which didn't work), I shortened...

Stop sink overflow pipe trapping water and getting smelly

Hi all, I was helped on these forums to diagnose a smelly kitchen sink. It turned out that the overflow pipe was to blame. I now periodically clean the pipe, but the smell and gunk come back. This is due to a design flaw. I am looking for advice on how to fix this. The sink is a double...

Strange screw fixing for bathroom socket. How to reattach?

That's very helpful. Thank you so much! Do you know if the fixing is supposed to come loose or if it might have snapped off?

Strange screw fixing for bathroom socket. How to reattach?

Hi all, I recently repainted my bathroom, so unscrewed the shaver socket to paint around it. I now wish to reattach, and am puzzled with how the screw attachment works. The screw is embedded in a pronged, double semi-circular piece of metal which is free standing from the socket casing...

Stinky sink - incorrectly fitted trap?

Thanks. This is good advice too. It is looking like the overflow was the main culprit here, but when I cleaned the filter of the washing machine the filter did have a bad "drainy" smell. A boil wash is a good precaution.

Stinky sink - incorrectly fitted trap?

Thanks. I have given the overflow a good flush, but I don't think it is the issue - it rarely (if ever) gets used. The sewer smell comes in a single "gust" shortly after the last bit of water has drained from the sink - it is this which makes me think the trap is syphoning. Update: After...

Stinky sink - incorrectly fitted trap?

Thanks. I will get a drain specialist to come and take a look. It is reassuring that the ptrap is not the problem.

Stinky sink - incorrectly fitted trap?

Thanks. I hope it is that. That sounds easy for a plumber to fix. Would a blockage cause the sewer gases to leak out when the sink is flushed? This is why I thought it was a venting problem. Can a blockage disrupt venting?

Stinky sink - incorrectly fitted trap?

Hi all, I am suffering with sewer gas coming from my sink when it drains. I live in a block of flats and need to find out if the problem is my plumbing (my responsibility) or the drains (management company's responsibility). I had the trap replaced recently, which did not solve the...
