What have you been doing today?

Been fitting bloody skirtings, architraves, etc etc all weekend, started at 09:00 this morning and knocked off at 20:45 … sat in the garden with a beer and a Burger King I ordered on those phone apps. Couple more to go tomorrow and their done hopefully. Need to give most rooms another coat...

    Scotland

Surrey to Glasgow? That's a fair trek... you should book a hotel for a couple of days to split up the travel, go out on the town for a few drinks... Glasgow's a great city, it's funny hearing English people wonder whether they'll get any hassle there considering people in Glasgow hear English...

    Budget 2nd Fix Brad Nailers

As you might have guessed I just persevered with the hammer and nail punch but this is a really good option to just have in the shed for future use... it's like you say, that compressor could come in handy for many things. That's worth considering for sure.

Skirting on uneven (I.e. not flat) wall?

Thanks @JobAndKnock , you’ve been a massive help mate. Good as I’m gonna get it for now I think.

Skirting on uneven (I.e. not flat) wall?

Used a block plane to scribe the hump in the middle, sits a lot better now, not perfect but enough the carpet will hide any gaps. Down to one problem, the drop off in the wall.

Skirting on uneven (I.e. not flat) wall?

@JobAndKnock Don’t think your drawings loaded mate but I’m sure I follow. With regards to plaster kick out at the bottom, I’ve knocked most of this back already with a wood chisel, the skirting sits fairly tight until it hits the point where the wall drops back. I’m already using 40-50mm...

Skirting on uneven (I.e. not flat) wall?

Yeah I’m gonna wedge it at the bottom, packing up the floorboards would be the best option but they shoot under a stud wall at that point and it would be a pain the *** cutting the boards to level them all Oh yeah and it’s 100% the wall, I’ve chopped away all the plaster there and the cable...

Skirting on uneven (I.e. not flat) wall?

Doesn’t help that the floor dips by about 8-12mm at that point either.

Skirting on uneven (I.e. not flat) wall?

I can bend the end of the board until it touches the wall (leaves a slight gap still at the midpoint) but there's a lot of tension in the board when I do this which I fear would just pull any fixing out of the wall (I'm only fixing into plaster here), unless I mech fix with a c/sunk screw to a...

Skirting on uneven (I.e. not flat) wall?

Fitting the skirting in a room following a plaster skim and things were going well until this wall. It’s flat at the other side and remains flat until about the last 500mm or so and then dips drastically by at least 20mm. It’s big enough to fit another skirting down the back of it. What’s...

    Budget 2nd Fix Brad Nailers

Are there any that’s worth the money for a one off job? It’s the type of tool you wouldn’t pay hundreds of pounds for if you aren’t going to use a lot but it’s £75 to hire a Paslode or equal for the week. Are any of those budget guns from Toolstation and the like up to the job of fitting...

Please share your opinion on price/time to complete this job

I didn’t need to read past “£10/hr”, they are taking the absolute **** and I can say that without looking at your running costs. You’re currently being paid far far less than someone stacking shelves in Tesco, £10/hr for someone self employed providing your own tools and travel is nowhere near...

What type of paint & brush gives best results on Skirting & architrave

What grit level would you go for the sanding after primer and undercoat layers. I assume you mean just a very light sand to smooth it off?

Paint peeled off in a long strip (not flaky)

Is that bare plaster underneath? Did the previous owner perhaps not mist coat their new plaster walls? I have a similar thing happening although I did mist coat after the wall was skimmed. A couple of people in the painting trade have suggested it’s because we’ve used Silk paint after the...

What is the biggest issue currently facing your street?

My b*stard neighbour, female, absolute deranged lunatic, noisiest bunch on the street, having some big barney out the front with someone every two weeks, place is stinking of their hash all the time… literal scum that’s ruined the enjoyment of our home. They should enact The Purge tbh.

Investing, Cryptocurrency, Crypto Bros, Stonks, Bonds, Hodls, Inflation and Apocalypse.

I remember being aware of Bitcoin way back in the day, when they were well under a dollar each and I remember only having a passing interest in it, thinking that it was more of a geek thing or for buying illicit stuff off the dark web. I never paid enough attention and I'm kicking myself now...

Investing, Cryptocurrency, Crypto Bros, Stonks, Bonds, Hodls, Inflation and Apocalypse.

Bit of a catch all thread for the stock market, investing, cryptos and the economy/inflation. First off for disclosure, I hold no cryptos or stocks at present but having had a spell in investing post 2008 crash, I've kept an interest in it. A couple of years back I began to notice that a lot of...

    UK housing stock

There is nothing inherently wrong with new housing, modern building techniques, modern materials, airtight construction, increased U values and everything that goes with it. The problem which we all seem to agree with is absolutely criminal house builders, lowest bid tendering processes and the...

Spate of Attacks on Gay People

As I think I’ve explained two times now, you are over focussing on the relevance of them being gay, there has been uncountable double murders in Europe including beheadings. Terrible things happen all the time for all manner of reasons, people are killed for being black, for being white, for...
