    coiled cable

I'm not aware of any law of physics that states that current flowing in a coil produces any more heat than it would if it was straight. It does create a strong magnetic field, but the heat effect is, as already stated, only due to the proximity of the wires and lack of heat dissipation that results.

Cable routing between cooker isolator and outlet

I'm not sure if steel capping is OK here (on the diagonal) - should it not be steel conduit? However, as you guys know, if it's more than 50mm deep in the wall then no extra protection is required, though running diagonally is always poor practice.

    Hardware malfunction - help please!!

You are welcome, Softus. Really happy that my PC is working again, with a shiny new OS install. Five years and still going - not bad, eh? Lovingly built by hand...(with an ESD wrist-strap, of course).

    Hardware malfunction - help please!!

Sorry for the time-wasting, but I guess I was just convinced it was a mobo/cpu fault as a result of overheating. Well, it only shows to go...

    Hardware malfunction - help please!!

Well folks, I seem to have solved the problem (thanks for suggestions :D). I went into the BIOS and set it to default, saved the changes and carried on with the Windows installation...and, hey presto, it's working! So I have unnecessarily bought a new CPU...only 15 quid, mind, so it'll do as...

    Hardware malfunction - help please!!

I would welcome any suggestions as to how to proceed further. I haven't used any diagnostic software or hardware, so apart from changing out memory, graphics, hdd, cdrom, keyboard & mouse, there's not much I can do, or is there? It is strange, as the machine was working OK before the...

    electrical lay out software

Thanks eggplant. Yep, there's plenty out there, but I haven't yet seen a simple domestic electrics layout prog using BS symbols. Maybe I'll try MS Visio...

    Hardware malfunction - help please!!

Interesting...my CPU is a 1.2GHz Athlon, which has run fine (not overclocked) for about 5 years (though not in constant use). I've found a replacement cpu, but finding an exact same mobo won't be so easy (some on eBay but in USA). So my plan is to change out my cpu in the hope that the mobo...

    Hardware malfunction - help please!!

Thanks, yes I've replaced the molex. I think what's happened is that the overheating of the CPU has caused some damage (cpu and/or mobo) that didn't cause my PC to fail immediately, but as I'm reinstalling Windows there are some hardware checks being made of the whole system and something is...

Why does washing machine have to be double poled?

No difference, but if it's in the switch it's easier to replace. Also, if it's in the switch (as in FCU), you could downgrade the cable from the switch to the appliance if necessary (keeping to the requirements of the regs, of course!).

    Hardware malfunction - help please!!

Thanks, that article is definitely dealing with my problem, though, having swapped everything out except the PSU, I'm still no better off (memory, HDD, CR-ROM, graphics card, keyboard, mouse, the lot). The reason I am reinstalling my OS is because of a virus problem which then led me to...

    Hardware malfunction - help please!!

Hi - I am a fairly experienced PC builder/upgrader, but have run into a 'blue screen of death' problem which I need some help with. I am reinstalling Windows 2000 on an AMD PC, which has been running it fine up till now. I am installing it on a 120GB hard drive that has been partitioned...

Thanks Lynda (and sorry!). OK, so any software out there for this purpose, anybody?

    PLEASE HELP CONFUSED APPRENTICE

Yes, I know this seems very low. I originally measured it as 0.20 Ohms some months ago, but perhaps didn't zero the tester correctly. This time round, I went to great pains to zero correctly and then connected my earth lead to the MET, and the neutral and live leads to the neutral and live...

    electrical lay out software

Can I come in here and ask if there's a program specifically for drawing domestic wiring layout, i.e. showing the position of lights, sockets, etc within a room using BS symbols? Ta. __________________________________ lynda, moderator no, (forum rule 20) but I have split your post

Thanks Spark123, I'll look at it later.

Why does washing machine have to be double poled?

Hmmm...safety? I heard somewhere that washing machines were a major cause of domestic fires...maybe not, but best keep it isolated when not in use, though they probably catch fire when they're in use, if at all...

    PLEASE HELP CONFUSED APPRENTICE

Sorry, BAS, I meant the R1+R2 value is 0.20 Ohms, so my comments still apply. However, whichever way you measure it, the results are well within BS7671. It would be nice, though, if they tallied...

    PLEASE HELP CONFUSED APPRENTICE

Simon, if I may put my oar in....I have recently finished testing a ring main with a Fluke 1653 tester. I carried out my tests in the same way Industryspark describes, but still got some discrepancies when comparing my calculated value of Zs to that actually measured at the socket. For...

    Fire hoods required?

Hi - I have fitted recessed downlighters in ceiling of kitchen in small flat in block. It is top flat, so only loft space above. I have cleared the space around the lights of loft insulation, but am wondering if fire-retardant hoods are a requirement here. Thanks in advance.
