How to get the garden level tips

Hijacking an old post here. I'm after the same (and Thermo, I really am trying here to cut down on the posts!) I'm raising a part of my garden, and on advice I'm using concrete slabs as a retainer down one slide as the gardne not only slopes away from the house, but also away to the right...

Building a garden step - photos uploaded with plan

Folks I've looked in other threads to save putting one up but can't find what I'm after I'll be building a step into the middle of the two sleeper walls. It won't be a whole sleeper's length wide, but a flagstone width of 600mm. Do I need to dig tout he entire space for the...

To drain or not to drain, that is the question?!?

If it would stop snowing, sleeting and hailstoning I would! Thanks again for your help

My hardcore was nice and compacted, and now it's not!

Folks Since the hardcore was 'spongy', I haven't done anything to it and now it's solid as a rock. We've has hail, rain, snow, frost, the lot over the past week or so and it's solid. Does this mean it has settled ok now, or could there still be a problem with clay underneath? just...

To drain or not to drain, that is the question?!?

Thanks again Thermo I've just thought about the posts that hold in the sleepers. Is there anything I can do to prolong their life? They are already treated. Or I'm I not giving wood the justice it deserves? Cheers

To drain or not to drain, that is the question?!?

Just realised. Will the fact that I have put DPC behind the sleepers make any difference? Should I remove this so the water can drain away a bit more freely or leave it in to protect the wood? Cheers

To drain or not to drain, that is the question?!?

Point taken Thermo having never done anything like this before I'm finding it hard to follow myself. Might name the garden 'DIYnot' at the opening ceremony; which I hope isn't too far away. The soil is really different in places. Ranging from full of crappy old bits of brick and clay...

To drain or not to drain, that is the question?!?

Thanks Neo, and much appreciated. To answer your questions and pointers: 1. Yes. Posts are 2 ft in the ground and rock solid in concrete! 2. Was always going to put clean stone behind them, just wasn't sure if I had to put a drain in also 3. From the house to the back of the sleepers is...

To drain or not to drain, that is the question?!?

As you can see I am building a step with new railway sleepers. The garden, even after I've levelled it a bit, will still slope towards the sleepers, and because of this I'm wondering whether or not I need to put a drain in so as to not put too much strain on the sleeper wall. As I see it I...

    Retaining within a retainer!

Evening all. Does anyone have any advice on what depth and height the retaining slabs should be; relating to previous posts on this thread? Also, do they just go in to the ground or is some sort of fixer needed? Thanks again to all...

    Retaining within a retainer!

Actually, just realised. As the garden currently slopes away to the left as the pictures show, it may be a bit higher up against the fence on the left hand side after I've tried to flatten it out a bit. Thanks again

    Retaining within a retainer!

As far as I can measure as it is, I'm looking at around 8 inches max at the highest point plus the depth of the turf. Cheers

    Retaining within a retainer!

Thanks Thermo Is there a rule of thumb in terms of how deep and how high they can go, and therefore how much they can retain? Also any ideas for covering them up out of sight, or is it just planting that is the best option here?
