    Floor Insulation

glass wool insulation, indeed ALL insulation - should be fire retardant. And as for putting hot ash / embers down gaps in your floorboards.... what do you *DO* in your living room!?!?!

Thanks Matty.... so is Amtico's opening post that it "scratches easily" just BS then?

Just scratched my new Amtico flooring!!!!!!

That's a worry ..... I've a crew coming in to fit 50 m2 of Karndean tomorrow.... sold to us on the basis that it (and all) vinyl floors were harder wearing / less susceptible to scratching than wood!

    Exterior timber paints

Johanna... got Valtti from paint shop in Rutherglen. They have huge stock, and can mix to code required. It's not cheap, but brilliant!

Chased phone line into wall, wet plaster over = interference

Update: plaster's almost dry, crackle's almost gone. Must be a nick in the cable somewhere. Thanks for lots of great info though folks, 'preciate it.

Chased phone line into wall, wet plaster over = interference

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I'm going to have to dig it out and re-run. Bu88er. I used 4-pair telecoms cable from DIY store. Yeah.... hindsight's a wonderful thing.... I thought about replacing it, but that would have involved lifting floor in loft, and trying to locate it through...

Chased phone line into wall, wet plaster over = interference

Hi all, suppose I wanted to move BT master socket during a house renovation. If I chased the old, yellowed phone cable into the wall, and plastered over, it would be much, much neater. But if I were to do this, and ended up with a pronounced crackle on the line, might it be the case that a...

    Insulation which quilted foil

Indeed. Now back to topic - how effective are these foil-based insulation products (quilted multi-layer or not) for lofts, and is the very thin FoilTec product really any good for sub-floor? Thanks guys.

    Insulation which quilted foil

Fair enough.... I just hijacked John's thread, as it seemed appropriate, and it looks like he never did get an answer to his Q :-)

    Insulation which quilted foil

Ah, but I'm not doing a conversion - I only want to insulate - so BCO shouldn't care?

    Insulation which quilted foil

Hi, any more info? I too am looking to insulate house, and am confused about these foil products. The tech spec suggests they're good, but intuitively, they don't *look* as good as a big thick wodge of Kingspan or Rockwool... what are people's experience? For the (unused) loft, choice is...

    What's the last resort?

Sorted.... found the brass elbow from <insert name of major online retailer here> had a thread all rough and burred. Tickled it up with a jeweller's file, and all's well. I guess it was rough enough to cut up the ptfe to the point of uselessness. Magic - the pan works - I'm off for a dump. :D

    What's the last resort?

It leaks if I don't.... so I need more tape?

    What's the last resort?

Oh, the little red thing that's all chewed up when I disconnect it? I've gone through a couple of them already.

    What's the last resort?

I'm fitting a cistern just now, and I simply cannot get the ******* union to be watertight. Cisten bottom-fill is a plastic 1/2" male thread, and I'm screwing on a 90 deg. female 1/2" elbow. Plastic is definately not cross-threaded. Do I just wind on more and more ptfe? How many turns is "too...

    Mirror Removal

I reckon you're screwed mate, unless it's stuck to plasterboard, in which case you *might* be able to remove all the tiles around, and cut out the plasterboard section with the mirror still attached.

    Cutting in

Don't use a brush that's too small, as it dosen't load enough paint for a long, steady run along your edges. I have a "favourite" brush I use for nothing else - it's a big fat 2-inch job, and works wonders. Always use good quality natural bristles - if you ever see a synthetic brush, throw it...

    Swinging Doors

All the internal doors in our house swing open, and I mean *really* swing open - up to 140 degrees in some cases! I wouldn't mind if they swung shut, but not open. How easy is it, and what needs done to refit them so they don't swing? My alternative approach is to smack the hinges with a...
