    Newel problem / structural support

Many thanks for this I really appreciate the help. I am not sure this solves the issue as I need to remove support from under the Newel to create the width in the WC. I was proposing something like this. Trim 2/3's off newel, and bolt through to a 'Structural' stud wall with posts behind and...

    Newel problem / structural support

I am not sure I understand? Where would the joist run, it can't cross to the right due to head height restrictions (there is a WC going under the stairs). I was thinking something like this???

    Newel problem / structural support

Thanks both. Newel post is structural; therefore I want to transfer the load to an additional post/the stud wall. The stud wall can be made structural. Removing 60mm/leaving 30mm should work fine. We could then have double studs behind the newel, and further studs beside the newel (ie form a...

    Newel problem / structural support

Can it be sistered? i.e. bolt through the newel to a post where the red column is, and then cut the newel where the blue lines cross? The red post is aligned with where we will be building a stud wall to enclose the WC.

    Newel problem / structural support

Here are some pics after day 1. The post on the right in the first 3 pics is going to intrude into the WC. Is it possible to sister a newel to a stud, post or similar?

    Newel problem / structural support

I am having a staircase installed this week (!); and it is only now that it has been made clear that one of the newel posts (right side on pic below) is going to protrude into the downstairs WC. Is there any way to cut/support the right hand newel with a post/steel? NB There is a stud wall in...

Mount BT dropwire to fascia board

So, I measured the rafters today and they are 5''/50mm. The BT 22 bracket has the wide holes centered at c50mm. From up on the scaffolding I can't see the rafter, but was going to assume the centre is aligned with the fascia nail (and drill a test pilot holes). I was planning to offset the...

    Hallway cupboard light

Thanks all. Based upon the above I am thinking of a 1200mm batten in cool white with a door switch on the RH door. (I plan to have rails running front to back either side of the door with hooks in the centre; as I prefer hooks for day-to-day use).

    Heatmeiser Slimline v Neostat

The UFH plan is : - G/F kitchen - wet UFH in screed (already laid) - 1/F bathroom - elec UFH under tiles (to be laid when tiled) The rest of the rooms have rads. I think they do an e-version of both the Neo and Slimline

    Heatmeiser Slimline v Neostat

Am due to be getting UFH (both wet & electric) soon and have been researching thermostats. What is the difference between the Heatmeiser Slimline v Neostat? Which of the two is better/preferred? Thanks.

Mount BT dropwire to fascia board

I was planning on using a BT bracket 22. But I was not sure that the 3 holes would fit on the rafter end and thought a larger 10mm screw eye might be better/easier. If I got 1x 8mm screw through pvc fascia and rafter and two through just the fascia would that liekly be sufficient to hold a...

    Hallway cupboard light

What sort of light would be good for a hall cupboard? The cupboard is accessed via double doors; it will have a high shelf and a hanging rail. The shelf would seem to rule out a pendant, and will also block light. What is the recommended option? A batton on the wall above the door? I...

Mount BT dropwire to fascia board

Would this be ok to mount a dropwire to my pvc fascia? https://www.gsproducts.co.uk/stainless-steel-screw-eyes/ I would position the screw in line with a rafter (based upon where the fascia nail). The existing bracket has been removed and we are adding hanging tiles so preference is to fix...

    Ethernet cabling

Thanks for the tips. I have been out and bought a 100m reel. My installed ethernet network is very minimal (sitting room, home office & kids playroom). At this stage I am planning on adding to this with some cable from the g/f cupboard that holds the comms up to the loft area; that will allow...
