    compression joints

50% of the new rads I have fitted are leaking on the unions to the valves. I was under the impression that as long as they are clean and well lined up no paste/gear is needed, you just connected up and tighten. I got the rads from Plumbworld and the valves are Danfloss TRV. p.s. they...

    Draining down Central heating.

I am in the process of fitting all new rads in my house and I am adding a new radiator in the utility room. Rather than branch off existing rads I cut the flow and return (22mm) pipes. I then drained the system and tried to solder the new joints. Unfortunately they leaked. I could not get...

    Yorkshires

Will do thanks. For awkward concealed work, can you just apply the heat - wait for the solder and leave?

    Yorkshires

I am just about to put yorkshires fittings on all new rads in the house. Am I right in saying that all you need to do is liberally smother the pipes with flux, heat the fitting and as soon as the solder pops out, remove the heat and wipe away excess with a brush or cloth. Any other tips. I...

    T off 3/4inch pipe using 22mm to 15mm

I need to T off the main central heating pipes to add another radiator in a utility room. I cant use compression fittings since the main pipes are touching the underside of the floorboars. I suspect the pipes are 3/4 inch. Can I buy a 22mm/15mm/22mm solder T pieces and solder it to...

Who is using my electricity - meter spinning no mcbs on

I changed like for like (connection wise) Although it is on a split board I put all on the RCD side leaving two spare mcb holders. The bus bar was tightenening on all mcbs The reds went into the tops of mcbs I checked all the connection were tight on the copper. Made sure no lose...

    Connecting Rads with flexi hose

I was working on a site the other day and noticed that the radiators were fed from behind and centre using flexible hose. It looked neat as the pipe work was almost hidden. Is this a new thing? Any good and what is the product I am looking for? Cheers

How to test a consumer unit/house

How would an electrician test the wiring of a house? I guess it would start at the consumer unit and involve resistance/speed of RCD isolation etc. Is there an online guide that details these steps. It would be handy for people who have just moved into a new house and wanted to double...

Who is using my electricity - meter spinning no mcbs on

I Agree with the last post. Any existing faults (outside the consumer unit) will still be present once the new consumer unit has been installed. In actual fact it may highlight faults because the old CU had not RCD. The new one has. My question is this. What type of fault could cause...

Who is using my electricity - meter spinning no mcbs on

Point taken, although how could the wiring have any bearing on power consumption when the double pole switch is off? Or when all mcbs are off? Give me an example of faulty wiring where these two conditions means power consumption. I replaced all the wires into the correct places 100 times...

Who is using my electricity - meter spinning no mcbs on

I switch the double pole switch & all mcbs & rds off. The disk spins as slowly as is humanly possible to see. 100 times slower than a 100watt light bulb it is so slow that you have to rest your head fixed and eyeball it. It is so slow that if you glanced at it you would say it has...

    Sensitive RCD - 30m

I think I will sling the irons out and see if a new one solves the problem. The existing irons blow the rcd on all sockets we have tried them in. If the new iron blows the rcd then I gues it is a problem with the installation of the ring or consumer unit. Cheers

    Sensitive RCD - 30m

You are correct although immersions are often bypassed the RCD for this reason. Nuisance tripping. By putting a more sensitive (or faster) rcd on the iron I would not be by-passing the safety aspects. It would just mean that rather than whacking out the whole house it would just hit the...

    Sensitive RCD - 30m

Is there a plug in RCD that will trip before the main board RCD. The only ones I have seen are 30m and all the ones I have tried are slower than the main board. We have a dody Iron that only occasionally trips. Obviously I could change the iron but a more sensitve RCD would work better...
