    Removing old tiles

Hi, has anyone experience with removing old tiles from a bathroom. I'm replacing my bathroom suite soon and the first thing I need to do is get the tiles off. 3 walls are plasterboard, 1 is breeze block. I've heard that it's often better to tile over old tiles rather than remove them. Is this...

Soil Stack! Bendy or not ?

Any combustible materials must be at least 25mm from an open flue pipe. For room-sealed or fan flued appliances horizontal clearances to a soil or drain pipe vary. If you have the installation instructions for your boiler it will say in there.

    Problems with TRV?

The radiator will still work regardless of the direction of flow. The arrow is only there to stop the valve hammering when water flows through, but this was really only a problem with older valves, most new valves have a double headed arrow. If you have drops i.e. the pipes to the radiator drop...

    Combi boilers

A cupboard is ok if the flue length is within the limits specified in the installation instructions. As a general rule, fan flue boilers can have a *maximum* of 3 to 4m of straight flue, 90deg bends are equivalent to about .5m to .75m of flue but you'll need to check manufacturers instructions.

    Noisey Central Heating Boiler

These boilers use two thermostats, one for high one for low. If the boiler o/heats on both high AND low then it is unlikely to be a thermostat problem, although it is possible. Is the pump definitely running? Sometimes they hum but are not actually moving. Undo the screw on the front (Grundfoss...

    removing a radiator

Turning off the TRV and the lockshield valve should be ok, but if the room gets very cold i.e. about 3 degrees celcius then the TRV may open up.

    Female Central Heating

What boiler make/model is it? If the diverter valve body is stiff then replacing the head won't cure this. Sometimes turning the body manually will loosen it. If it's a Danfoss/Randall or Potterton then turning the spindle 360 degs several times will free it but this can also cause the spindle...

    Noisy hot water tank

Hi 07, I'm not sure what noise you've got from your description. I take it it isn't the cold storage tank but the boilermate itself. Did you adjust your boiler stat when you carried out the work on your rad? Boilermates are designed to work with low output boilers so they require that the...

    boiler in shower room

The data badge or manual of the boiler may have either an IP or drip rating (IP is newer) indicating the level of protection against ingress of dirt or water. This is defined here http://www.plasa.org/standards/faq/faq.asp?FAQID=1012830314 The IEE Regs (BS 7671) defines 4 zones (0 to 3)...

    Can't find drain cock!

If you have a pipe near the door then you can buy a self-cutting washing machine tap. You clamp it around the 15mm pipe and then screw it in to cut a hole in the pipe wall. Then attach a washing machine hose to drain. It looks a bit ugly though. Alternatively, you can buy a radiator valve and...

Combi Boiler - hot water not very hot

Can't remember much about Ocean Spa but it may also be the H/W thermistor playing up (indicated by a low flame), diverter valve passing (see if rads get hot when you turn the water on), modureg needs adjusting (flame low again). Or, as you mentioned, scale.

    Central heating wiring diagram

Sorry, in my previous post I mentioned the HSA3D and Potterton PMV3 as being compatible. I meant HSA3 and potterton PMV3.

    Central heating wiring diagram

Sounds like your 3-way valve is kaputt if it's hanging off. Check the markings on the valve head. If the valve actuator is chrome then it's most likely a honeywell v4039 1036 (or that may be v4036 1039, can't remember). The 1036 is the mid position type. If you have a plastic actuator then it...

    Ch Thermostat

Many of the new honeywell ones use a relay to switch the heating on/off, so they only click when you have a demand for heat from the programmer. These must have common, switched live and neutral wires to power the relay (not all stats do, some just have common and switched live). If you take the...

    Combi boilers

Hi Breezer, I'm new to these forums and I just noticed your message. Can I add that BG will change the ht exchanger but only if it's leaking. If the problem is due to scale, sludge or noise then it is not covered (neither are sludged up radiators)
