Is this a universal truth or is there anyone else out there who does it the other way round (like me) - picture rails, skirting, door and window frames first - then ceiling and walls - then doors and opening windows? I wonder why I do it that way?

A little off your point, but 20W halogens are hot. Don't keep your butter dish on the shelf above the lights else the butter melts: similar problems with honey, chocolate etc. 10W are much better and plenty bright enough.

Best to ask the plasterer who's going to do the job! I've avoided a lot of what I thought were essential bits of preparation by asking the plasterer what needed doing first.

Understand your concern about the price of plastering. But think of the time and money you'll spend fixing the flakey plaster (perhaps not very well), and the time and money papering. At least you'll be able to paint a well-plastered wall - cheaper than paper - and you'll know the job's done...
