Writing a letter to my Bank Manager - Help

It might be worth either a phone call or a personal visit. I have known both to work. Their system is set up to charge automatically and my personal view is that they (1) are happy to take your money if you keep quiet and (2) are happy to refund the charge completely to make you feel like a...

    spy hole viewers

Seriously though, if you can manage to install one of those little cameras it will give you a very much better picture of who's outside than any spyhole viewer.

Hot Cup = Heat Stain (in Ducal Top) = Dog House

Topps* Ring.Away No idea how it does it, but it works. No idea if you can still buy it, my little tube is at least 30 years old when I come to work it out   But it still works.

    Timber Guttering

Purely in the interests of this forum, I am willing to make a special expedition to Italy to find out, contributions in support of this selfless quest are welcome. Seriously, I hadn't noticed, so I have just trundled through my photos of little Italian streets. As far as I can tell, and...

    Slate roof with no underfelt

Odd idea: Buy yourself a cheap lot of white cotton material. Tack it onto the inside of the roof. Plenty of airflow. Not much dirt gets past. This is a touch eccentric, but it works. Does it comply with your building regs? I haven't a clue.

    Timber Guttering

I've noticed on holiday in Italy that copper guttering and downpipes are the norm in new builds. They look great. Is this some kind of cultural thing or is there a sound reason? It sounds wildly expensive, compared with yukky plastic or even our traditional alternatives.

    blown bulb and poor connection

Here's a theory.  Sometimes bulbs blowing cause fuses to blow too - I guess because of something odd happening inside the bulb as it flashes to oblivion. Now, suppose there was a dodgy connection in the rose - a wire under tension under a screw that was almost holding it...

    Explain the Neutral???

   Adam_151 - congratulations.   You win my secret prize for the first one to get from that start point to the cat in the box. There was going to be another prize for the first one to ask how long was the piece of string, but unfortunately my sense of...

    Explain the Neutral???

b-a-s, Did I really do that? Not that I would have avoided it you know, but just that if I had done it, I would have preferred to know I was :D Of course, as a huge fan of a niche run-time-interpreted language, I would disagree with your most recent tag-line - subject for another thread one...

    Explain the Neutral???

Oh no they're not. The wave outside the wire is caused by the activity of the electrons inside the wire. Discuss. On the other hand, does the original poster feel that any of the replies to date actually give a helpful answer to what seemed like a very simple question?

    Explain the Neutral???

    Prefer the string theory myself.

    ...or a piece of string.

    Explain the Neutral???

Sorry, I did really mean to get round to the point about the neutral. So let me introduce another ridiculous and flawed analogy. The electrons in the copper are like a long piece of string. Getting power from the power source to your electrical device is like using that long piece of string...

    Explain the Neutral???

Gentlemen, We are in danger of getting into Quantum Theory and the differing properties that electrons demonstrate depending on whether they are being waves or particles. It's not that the electrons stream up and down the wire at the speed the electricity seems to get from one end to the...

    Security light with sensor

You might have wired it right. Some of these lights will turn on and off at the switch as you describe - until you do something in particular at the switch - then they behave as I expect you want yours to. Check instructions.

    Paint removal from cast iron

20p, Not sure about cracking the pipe - though I would have expected cast iron to cope with heat OK. But I would be surprised if you could get the cast iron hot enough to strip the paint - it being a good conductor.

How to clean a roller quickly and effectively after use?

Really!!! Never thought of that. Anyone else tried it? Probably not ecologically sound, but if it really works and doesn't cause domestic strife due to paint in the next wash - I'd give it a go

    New Light Fitting

OOOH! I wonder what really bad experience you had of: project managers: IT experts: desks: computers: milk rounds: that makes you come off with all this? Even allowing for your belated attempt to laugh it off. On the other hand: Joeh seriously needs sound advice. He has obviously lived...

How to create a concave in wooden block

When you say concave, I think of a kind of saucer-shaped depression. You can get one of those by careful use of a drum sander on a normal drill. If what you really want is a 3" diameter cylindrical hole then you really need a router.

    domestic ringmains

Frantically ignoring all that scatologiy.... It could be that this socket was in a distant corner of a room with a concrete floor and there just happened to be conduit running down the wall... Come to think of it, how on earth did that happen (in a wee room in my house)? They must have...
