Windows jammed shut because of paint!!!! Help !

I see this is a bit old - but I've just come across it. Are these sash windows? Talking about top and bottom suggests they might be. If so, they only really satisfactory solution is to get the sashes out to clean them up. Further advice available on request :) :)

...but be careful, it falls apart the first time you read it.

    Greasy Ceiling

Ammonia!! Sudden, huge nostalgia kick. It used to sit on a shelf high up in the kitchen in a ridged glass bottle with a white label with red and blue writing. I don't remember it ever being used though.

PVA mix as a primer/sealer - How long does it take to dry?

Taz, My preference for PVA comes from experience with an old house (1896) with external rendered walls and some dubious bits of lath and plaster inside. Inside and out I like a thin PVA coat on any untreated bits to give a good grip for the paint. Externally I wash and brush down then PVA...

    Kitchen Tiling

Worktop first - and unless your walls are really bendy the tiles will hide the gaps. If you tile first you will be left with a variable-sized horizontal gap that will never look right.

    WALLPAPER /MOLD QUESTION

DON'T use vinyl-coated paper. This keeps the moisture in the wall and promotes mould growth. If you give the wall a chance to breathe you might find the damp goes away.

PVA mix as a primer/sealer - How long does it take to dry?

You'll be able to tell by looking at it. Like breezer says, it depends on the conditions and how much you put on. But if it's inside and warm and ventilated and you start NOW it should be OK by tomorrow night :) :)

    JFK

I'm with you on this - you can dig over what's available again and again, using more modern analytical techniques, but it's my belief that there is no longer any really substantial evidence to tell the real story. Some of it may have been deliberately destroyed. The pathological evidence from...

    Removing wallpaper paste

If stripped properly there won't be much left - meaning I hope you gave it a good soak in the first place. A wash down with a rough sponge should do the job. You'll know by looking at it. I have plenty of once-papered walls now painted and it's not a big deal really.

Technique for wiring lights and getting cables to fit ?

Well I hope no-one raises problems with the "putting the rose in the attic" option. I have several of those. It is a lot easier than trying to force an impossible number of connections into a tiny fitting. As far as I was concerned, the rose in the attic was just as good, if not better, than...

To Line or not to line

Walls breathe better without the lining (personal view based on old walls). You'll always be able to see the join (remember Morecambe and Wise). I'd be really surprised if lining made any difference to the echoes? But would be interested in other views. Anyway, by the time you get stuff in...

    Health and Safety

Groan. There's a child protection theme in there too. Once upon a time people who worked with kids were able to do sensible things like leave them home or wait with them until they were collected. You can't do that on your own anymore. I guess I am not complaining about the need to protect...

    Hospitals

Hospital staff have been walking the streets in uniform for many years. Sorry, I'll say that differently, staff have been wearing uniform to and from work for many years. I really don't think that is a factor. "The system" has been lulled into a false sense of security by the...

    Hospitals

Not airborne, transferred by contact. The MRSA risk comes from a combination of factors. Spread is mostly by poor personal hygiene. Remember when they used to wash hands before and after every consultation? Seems they don't do that anymore. Combine that with some reduction in general...

    Archaeology

Wrong - devintly no - sorry, definitely not (it's been a stressful night). Strange, sad, juvenile - yes. What's worse, so do I. But what kind of dork would print a picture like that without recognising the humour-potential?

    Diynot Problem ?

Huge relief. I have also been having problems with Amazon and I was beginning to think a virus had managed to creep in under all our protective coverings    Good to see that I am not the only one experiencing the problem. BUT isn't is weird how being deprived of this...

    Drylined walls

Been through these dilemmas (1896 house). The quality answer, like D&J say, is to find yourself a reliable plasterer. A good one can make up for all kinds of peculiarities in your walls, leaving you with a perfectly flat wall. You might learn to plaster yourself............. :shock...

    pergola height

.... so I went outside to measure. My horizontals are at 2 metres. I really thought they were higher, but like thermo says - clear a tall person comfortably and you'll be right.

    pergola height

I had to solve this one myself last year. My answer depended on proportion and context - things like the height of the nearby arch and hedge (OK so the height of the hedge is variable) - and quite importantly on the height of me. It ended up just high enough for a nearly six-footer to...
