    Fixing a hole in soffit

The roof was old and leaking so the soffit has become rotten and has been repaired in several places with patches of plywood. I had part of the roof replaced but they were cowboys, increasing the price quoted all the time, so I just wanted to get rid of them and did not want to instuct them to...

    Fixing a hole in soffit

I think you can buy plastic pieces on ebay. I guess as they are lighter, the wood glue would work? What sort of glue do you advise to bond plastic to the painted soffit I have now? I have gorilla expoxy glue. I think that would work well?

    Fixing a hole in soffit

My friend, who is not a roofer, says he would advise a plastic piece cut to size and stuck with glue. He says it will be easier than screws. What do you think of this idea?

    Fixing a hole in soffit

I have a hole in my soffit as shown in the photo. The soffit looks to be made of chip board as the bit that fell off is also shown. There are a couple of small birds inside the loft and they have made this hole from a smaller hole! What is the easiest way to cover this hole? Thanks

    Fitting a new outdoor light

This is what confuses me. It does switch on when I connect the PL or SL on its own but then it switches off within a few seconds. And as much as I wave my hand in front of the PIR, the light won't turn back on so I don't know if it is faulty. I can't see why it would turn on and then stay...

    Fitting a new outdoor light

I bought a new PIR floodlight, which has L, N and E connections. My existing floodlight is an old one which can work as permanent light, or as PIR and so it had 4 cables and not 3. This is the old wiring. I tried with the SL isolated and with the PL isolated and with both SL and PL connected...

Timer extractor fan to non timer extractor fan

So I finally got round to doing this job! And it doesn't work :( First I tried to isolate the switched live cable in a block and forget about it. The light switches on when the power is back but then it switches off and I can't get it to switch on again by moving about in front of the motion...

    Recommend stain blocker

Very true, but I am tight  and if it is something that I already have that will do the trick, then that will be better. The property will be fully refurbised as it is sold with need of refurbishment, so this is just to make it less of an eye sore when people come to view as the rest of the...

    Recommend stain blocker

yeah, i saw that product at toolstation and it will work fine for what i need. i was thinking as unsually, the wall and ceilings are concrete instead of the normal plaster, does it still require the stain blocker? i don't have oil based undercoat unfortunately, only water based, so that is no...

    Recommend stain blocker

Will look for that. There is no hurry, so I can do the undercoat and then leave it for a couple of weeks even before I paint over the top of it. As it is concrete, I may need a few layers.

    Recommend stain blocker

I had a leak in the bathroom through the ceiling and onto the wall. I want to paint over it when it is fully dry. I am selling the property so want to paint over the stains. The wall and ceiling is actually concrete! Can anyone recommend a cheap but good stain blocker please? Thanks

Timer extractor fan to non timer extractor fan

yes, i am wondering what to do about this permanent live wire that i no longer need, that used to feed the timer. sounds like i can just end it and not use it and the switched live wire on its own is going to be fine. strange i remembered doing something else but then again my memory is pretty...

Timer extractor fan to non timer extractor fan

I have done this before but I can't remember the answer as my memory is poor. Please can someone remind me here? I have changed the extractor fan that has a timer at a property before with one that does not have a timer. There is a permament live and switched-live wire for the old fan but the...

    Roof ladder

when i was a kid, i used to climb up to our terraced roof to play with my brothers and his friends. it was only a single storey building but i was climbing up there when i was 7 or 8 years old, lol. so i have no fear of height. we didn't use a ladder, we just climbed using an iron bar that...

    Roof ladder

now that you have mentioned it, i will do :giggle: can anyone recommend a ladder that i can buy from the likes of wickes etc? I only need it for occasional use at my house.

    Roof ladder

they don't tend to have ladders that are high enough to get to the roof do they? it isn't the standard stuff that your average DIY person would be looking for as it takes a brave man / woman to climb that high  so i think because these ladders are so specialist, you have to buy them...

    Roof ladder

yeah, a car roof rack is useful for transporting ladders but they are quite expensive and unfortunately, i don't have a car anymore. i can get access to one by borrowing one, but obviously I can't be putting roof racks on other people's cars  unless of course there is a universal one...
