    Why two stats?

No sign of any rad. Exactly the same setup in my nan's house on the same estate, and she's been there since day one. The stat in the hall, TL 25T, has the top dial attached to a coiled tape... perhaps a thermometer as suggested. These two stats are three steps apart through a doorway and...

    My inherited CU

Got a feeling it's an '86 model of Landis & Gyr (CL27.2 ?)... though there's a handwritten label stating '14/4/87' (initially thought it read 89) which I assume was it's install date. :)

4A overload setting is undersized, as you've agreed, correct to 4.3A Is there any couplers between switchgear and pump... isolator, plug/socket, JB ? Could it be that the float switch is bobbing about causing chattering of contactor at/near low water level? All connections secure...

    Electric shower hot...then cold...then hot

What happens with electric showers if the mains water pressure drops... I mean do these units have pressure switches to switch off the element during pressure drops? If so, perhaps the water inlet mesh is clogging. Is there an in-line non-return valve in the water feed to the shower...

    2 port valve fault

Percussive maintenance used to work great on old tellys... not sure it's advisable on valve heads!!! How long have you been bullying it? ... you may have scarred it for life. You could grab a new one instead of faffing around. By all means tinker... take it apart, grease it up and put it...
