How do you turn unfinished oak into this?

Hi all, I've been looking to get some skirting boards, and I've found a local supplier who can get me unfished skirting boards at a decent price, so far so good. However, when I was looking around online I found a company who also stain skirting boards, and some of the pictures of their...

Where to get new skirting boards?

To be honest I wouldn't know where to start - any recommendations for any local ones up in the Preston / Lancashire area? The problem I have is I don't drive, hence my initial thoughts being online. Russ

Where to get new skirting boards?

Hi all, What's the best place to get new skirting boards? I'm actually after something other than the standard Torus / Bullnose / Ogee profiles. There are a few websites that look rather good, eg http://www.skirtingboards.com/, but these all seem to be the same company, and their customer...

    Boarding over ceiling

Hi all, I'm planning on boarding over an existing ceiling upstairs, and I've got a couple of questions that I hope someone can help me with! The existing ceiling is lath and plaster, the joists are 3 1/2" x 1 1/2". spaced about 35cm apart. I plan to screw 2 x 1 wooden battens across the...

Fitting a new floor, but a floating wall?

Alas, I've already done this and there's definitely nowt under that darn wall! :( At the moment all the signs are pointing to laying over the top of the existing floor, is this a common installation technique, or am I going to end up coming up against all sorts of problems because I'm doing...

Fitting a new floor, but a floating wall?

Hi all, I'm looking to replace an existing floor with a new solid wood floor. It's in an upstairs room, and the existing floor is standard t&g floorboards. However - one of the walls in this room is actually sitting on the existing floorboards! The wall runs parallel to the joists, but...

Room thermostat controlling rads & boiler. OpenTherm?

A lot of useful information that got me started is at the following url: http://www.automatedhome.co.uk/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=13d65f2528b4ec0a411d74da4bcff048&t=2050 I quote "Each FHT thermostat has 2 on / off time zones with target and setback temperatures. They then talk to the...

Auto pressure release valve - where to fit?

Actually, it's a little more complicated than that - we're using a system called Homeheat (or IQ3), where each room or zone has its own thermostat, that controls one or more mechanical TRV heads. So we can control the temperature in each zone and the times that the zone is on. The system can...

Auto pressure release valve - where to fit?

Thanks Hammerswinger, I must admit, I was under the impression these built in valves were a bit naff? But at the same time I have to say I'm hardly a plumber! Just a diy-er with a lot of google-time on my hands. :)

Auto pressure release valve - where to fit?

Thanks for the replies so far. :) I've not got any motorised valves fitted, how far from the pump should it be fitted? I think I remember reading before it should be fitted a certain distance from the boiler, something to do with the temperature of the water returning to the boiler? Russ

Auto pressure release valve - where to fit?

Hello all, I'm fitting TRVs to my radiators (see layout below), if I turn all the TRVs off I get a fairly unpleasant noise coming from the boiler and I've been advised that a auto pressure release valve would be a good solution? Is this right, and if so where should I fit it? The pipework...

does my system need to be drained to fit trvs?

Blimey - does that work? I'll have to give that a go next time I need to fiddle with one of my rads! Does that trick depend on a certain type/diameter of plumbing? eg plastic vs copper, 15mm vs 22mm? Russ

    Unpleasant toilet-side radiator damage!

 I was hoping it wouldn't come to that, what happens with the old one? Just end up in landfill, or can they be recycled somehow? Russ

    Unpleasant toilet-side radiator damage!

Hi all, Having been in our new place a couple months, we suddenly made the rather unpleasant discovery that the radiator next to the toilet was all corroded where it's come into contact with lawd knows what over the years. I'm guessing that if the radiator had the paint removed...

    Pipes creaking when they heat

Can I get insulation that thin? We're talking a few mm clearance if that! :( I was actually wondering whether another option might be to inject some kind of grease or silicon-type substance? Russ

    Bashfulness

One thing I've noticed, from my own observation Google seems to index this forum a lot more than it does Screwfix, so this board comes up before Screwfix in a lot of cases. This means much higher view ratings from non-members who come for an answer to their Google query but don't stick around...

    Labeling cables

Oh yes, on the labeling front, I've just got a Brother machine 30% off at Staples, which allegedly prints on labels that are heat, damp and chemical resistant, and it comes with 4m of tape, so fingers crossed this'll do the job. Russ :)
