    Insulated flue

I have an oil fired cooker boiler with an insulated flue. The flue is leaking water apparently from between the skins. As the flue has been stripped down and refitted several times due to cooker move and replacement I suspect that it is "past its sell by date" and needs renewing. Any...

    How many extensions

Thanks for your interest, Woody. I have read the approval notice and there is a condition that an acceptable system of surface water must be approved before commencement. However, my question was regarding the number of extensions allowed on and around a dwelling. I have also just read the flood...

    How many extensions

It is Fact. Following Storm Katie on Sunday night 9 of the able bodied men in the Hamlet spent their bank holiday clearing the road below the proposed development of debris (broken rock and stone) and reinstating on the lane, the run off from the car park at the property had totally washed away...

    How many extensions

A house in our hamlet has had 3 extensions including a "granny" flat. The property is on an unmade lane which is subject to flooding, mainly from a tarmac parking area of over 400 square meters at the property, this area drains to the lane and was constructed without planning consent. Despite...

    oil guage floating bead

Can anyone tell me where I can get one of the coloured beads that indicate oil level in the guage. I tried a fishing bead but it sank to the bottom.

Possible New build in Garden - Too near drains/sewers ?

If the drain in question serves only your property then its yours and not the responsibility of the water authority. If it serves more than one property then the water authority may well be concerned. The question is: if the drain currently serves only your property and your proposed new build...

    Fitting a heavy awning

I had a similar problem with an awning which was originally on the gable end of my bungalow. Following and extension build with a hip roof I was left with one course of blocks on a catnic lintel. I solved the problem with 2 off 8"x2" oak beams 8ft high bolted to the wall with 4 pairs of 12mm...

    Problem with wifi printer

I have just purchased a WiFi printer and both my win 10 machines have found it with no problem, however, my XP machine which is connected to the same wifi network will not find the printer. I have tried adding the printer with its normal model name and the name on the network to no avail. Any...

    Pressure dropping

I have a sealed S plan system and recently it has developed a leak - around half a bar a day - so quite serious. I have checked all accessible joints and fixed a minor weep, but not located the main leak. The only remaining pipes/connectors are under the floors to the rads, or the coil in the...

    Are fire bricks necessary?

A possible alternative is to render the opening and fit brick slips. It looks like brickwork but easier to fix and leaves a wider opening. I fixed mine with tile adhesive on the sides and fire cement on the back, pointed with grout using an icing syringe.

Can anyone identify this strange thing I found under my roof?

There is little indication of the size but if its long enough it could be a back support strap. My grandad had a similar thing which he pulled tight around his waist prior to lifting heavy weights.

Opening up a fireplace - A nasty surprise.

Just a thought about the pipe, it looks as if there is a patch vertically above it. It could be the return pipe with the flow above long gone from an old back boiler.
