Opening up a fireplace - A nasty surprise.

I would suggest that you remove the plaster from the wall above the opening. You should then find either a concrete lintel or a brick arch at the top of the builders opening. Of course I am assuming that the house is old enough to have an original fireplace, not a modern property with just a gas...

How do you go from newly cleared, overgrown garden, to lawn and vegetable garden? (newbie)

You do not say what size the garden is, but it does'nt look over big. In that case I would not use a rotavator, unless the ground is completely free of weeds, as it will spread the weed seeds all over the plot and you get a free lawn of weeds. For your proposed veg plot dig it over now...

    Selling Electrical Stuff On ebay

Best thing about hermes is that they will collect from your door for about 50p. When you are in the sticks and miles from a post office it is a bonus. Be careful with large letters, the standard price only pays for 100grams.

    Possible danger with solar power

Thanks for all the replies. I must admit I forgot that as soon as I switched off the power to the live bus the invertor would have shut down. I do have DC and AC isolators at the invertor and another AC isolator prior to the CU.

    Possible danger with solar power

Have been doing some minor changes to my electrics and switched off the double pole isolator on the CU. But then a thought, solar is connected to the live bus bar via a 20amp MCB and thus makes the bus bar live again but not connected to the incoming supply. Another reason for checking for dead...

Rubber connectors with jubilee clips are available in lots of different sizes to join almost any pipe to another. Your local builders merchant should have a suitable size.

Multiple recovery partitions - Windows 8.1

Having been informed by Microsoft that my free update to win 10 will soon be available I checked Disc Management to create a new partition to install win 10. I found that I have 3 recovery partitions, all empty, with respectively 450MB; 900MB and 20.01 GB of space. These prevent me from creating...

light to run off a battery

12v 1watt Bus lamps are ideal for that purpose, standard BC cap fits any table lamp. I used these some years ago for table lamps at a corporate dinner, used 12v 7ah sla batteries in plastic boxes covered with cloth as stands for the table lamps.

How to brick floor in outhouse

The space you are looking at would be originally the coal house. It is likely that the floor has sink due to years of having ton's of coal tipped on it. I would remove the brick floor, level underneath with concrete, then a liquid damp course and screed.

    Neighbours Tree

Following Donkmeister's post, I had a similar thing recently. Some years ago an elderly neighbour planted a Acacia tree in her garden. She was assured by the supplier that it would grow to 15 feet! After several years it was 60 feet high and still growing. She deciding it would have to come down...
