checking for damp - damp meter/protimeter

Unlikely that there will be a damp course. Forget the damp meter and chemical DPC cowboys. You have said that there is no sign of damp so don't try and invent some. When you replaster use lime plaster to allow the walls to breath and all should be OK

    Solar Energy

It seems that, contrary to my first assumption, that the Owl is indicating that the solar is working OK. As I will know when a high load is on e.g kettle and my normal ambient is circa 300 watts, the Owl will give a reasonable idea of the amount exported to the grid. I checked the supplier meter...

    Solar Energy

Thanks for your interest, John. The energy monitor is an Owl, supplied by British Gas. My Meter is LLandis & Gyr 5235A and the solar output meter is 5235B. Both have flashing red lights, flash frequency faster on higher loads. An interesting point, whilst typing this reply the wife spotted the...

    Solar Energy

Thanks to all of you for a lively discussion. John, you are correct in assuming that it is the clip on meter I am concerned about. I would have thought that as the solar system is producing sufficient power for the current load then the demand from the grid is zero or less and the energy monitor...

    Solar Energy

I have just had solar electric fitted. Currently it is producing around 600watts of power, and according to the output meter it is exporting around 300 watts to the grid. My energy meter shows I am using about 300 watts currently (this is my usual "ambient" load). Now, as this energy meter is...

    Dilemma while moving a doorway

Your proposed drawing shows the right hand door tight against the top of the stairs. Building regulations require I believe a 600mm gap between the top of the stairs and the bedroom door.

    Why?

Those of us using oil heating are winning this time. We have no Government quango looking after us, so our heating costs are tied to the oil price. My oil has price has dropped 40% since last year but no one shouted on our behalf when the crude was 120 dollars a barrel.

Viewing photographs from data disc on television

Format the disc as a video disk then copy the photos to it. Alternatively, does your TV have a VGA input, if so, connect the computer direct. Also, modern TV's have a wifi modem and your computer should find it if you list your available networks, you can then send your pictures direct to the TV.

Views on large rain water harvesting systems

You will need more than 1500 litres just for flushing toilets in a 5 bedroom house. I use 1000litres in 2 weeks for 2 people in a one bathroom bungalow. I use IBC tanks (2 for £130 delivered off E=bay). All in I have over 4000 litres of storage and this does all toilets and garden use. I have a...

Fixing the problems of a damp crawl space

I would think that having a meter to measure it is causing more heartache than the damp itself. The 1915 semi I used to live in had 3" of water on the earth subfloor and that caused no problems.

Heating oil, does it go off?

I do not envy you having a 2500 litre, that's a big bill whatever the price. I may be teaching you how to suck eggs but do you know that an order that large may not be deemed as domestic, and you will pay 20% VAT, so make sure that your supplier knows its for domestic and gives you the...

    Broken Leg

Sorry to here of your problems, Secure. Hope you recover ASAP. I was lucky when I broke my leg - just 8 years old so healed quickly with plaster cast. (Not so lucky 6 years later - got knocked off my bike by a hit & run driver and lost 2 fingers). Seriously though, keep smiling and keep us posted.

    Building regs

If the foul drain is used by other properties in addition to yours you will need a Build Over Agreement. If so be prepared for considerable expense as your local water authority in Somerset can be difficult.

Insulation between joists Floor.. Membrane and sand Yes No

Water on the sub floor is no problem. Many properties do not have sub floor-just earth. If your joists and floor are damp then the problem is either insufficient ventilation (likely from your description) or no damp course under the joists where they enter the wall.
