Ok... So the boiler is shutting off because the water going through it has reached the temp on its own stat (whatever number 5 equates to as it stands). But the pump is still running to pump the water in the pipes/coil (which is hopefully hotter than that in the cylinder itself) around the...

I see, thanks. Currently cylinder stat is covered but the immersion heater is wired only to a switch on the wall in the airing cupboard, which is uncovered. Presumably at the moment then, as the room thermostat is at minimum, the pump is running because the cylinder stat is telling it to (hence...

Not sure if this gives any indication of how the system is wired, but this morning, while checking the cylinder stat temperature during a timer on period (pump running) I turned the cylinder stat down to below 45 degrees C, and the pump immediately stopped. As soon as i turned it back up to...

:ROFLMAO: Not a manufacturer with a good reputation, then?!

Yeah, so essentially building a 'pack' from individual parts means potentially more reliable end result. We previously had a Salus wireless control which allowed 5 on/off points per day and different settings on weekends. That level of control would be more than enough and the programmer seemed...

The cylinder thermostat's cable goes back to the same wiring box as the pump and 2-port valve, but I've not taken off the cover yet to take a look (not that I'd necessarily understand it if I did...!). Would an image of the inside of this help? There is also an immersion heater fitted, though...

Also, is there any hard and fast rule as to what temperature the numbers 1-6 actually equate to? If I want to make sure the cylinder water is being heated to above 60 (hygiene reasons?) do I also need to make sure the boiler stat is up high enough, on top of the cylinder stat?

Oh, so do you think the cylinder water temp is actually controlled by the thermostat on the boiler (basically a dial numbered 1 to 6) rather than the one strapped to the cylinder? I was thinking that the boiler stat simply controlled how 'fiercely', so to speak, the boiler heated the water, so...

Thanks both. Although I presume our current controls would operate twin valves properly in a basic manner, as they're a bit old and limited I was going to say I would be keen to upgrade those as well while I'm at it. As i say the room stat is Fahrenheit and the "programmable" timer is a...

Hmm. At the moment then, with just the one 2-port valve, is the system simply pumping water around both the CH and HW 'zones' whenever the timer clock reaches an on period? And the water it's pumping around is only heated by the boiler if the room thermostat is turned up, or the cylinder...

Thanks guys. As you say I know it's impossible to tell without a plumber on site but I appreciate the advice despite my being green! At first glance it does sound like the first system you describe, Stem. The only thing I see in the airing cupboard that resembles those valves is this: From...

What a fool. Sorry, realised this myself just after posting (and verified with Google). Sorry! As it happens the timer clock just reached an "on" period, and the pump does indeed run constantly during this time (it feels pretty hot), even though the thermostat is at minimum. The boiler however...

Hi all, Just had a little time to play. I made sure that all of our cold water feeds (all cold taps, toilets, elec shower) are directly mains-fed, by turning off the mains and opening them up. They are as none would run. I'd read that some older systems had a cold water tank in the loft which...

Ah, fair enough, cheers Tony. Maybe an argument then, depending on bills, against replacing something with so little to go wrong, with a combi where there's a bit more going on!

Sorry all, been away for the weekend with zero phone signal. Which was quite nice, really! I do remember that about Corgi Home Plan, that they essentially just used the name after Corgi stopped being a 'badge of approval' so to speak, replaced by the Gas Safe Register, right? The system in the...

Thanks stem, again plenty for us to go at there once we get our heads around the system! Are the hygiene issues with cylinder / header tank systems something we should be concerned about? Is there an agreed method of keeping them clean?

Thanks for all the useful info! I'll hopefully do some investigating when I'm back at home, and try work out the answers to some of your points. We know the boiler was serviced last year by British Gas as that was in our building survey we had before moving in (looks like the previous owners had...

Hmm. Would that be located nearby the cylinder, or the boiler? I have tried turning up the thermostat and the radiators did get warm while the pump was running. And we have hot water in the cylinder too, so it looks like we have both at the same time as it stands. Not at home at the mo though so...

Hi all, We've just moved house from a small place with a combi, to a place with a cylinder system. This type of system is all new to me, so apologies for asking any obvious questions! Firstly, does anyone by chance know the approximate age of an Ideal Classic RS Room Sealed boiler? Corgi Home...
