    Garden Lawn Waterlogging advice

I agree with breezer but wonder if a machine will go deep enough? Ive used a garden folk previously. Pressed in as far as it will go and waggle it backwards and forwards to open up a 'funnel'. Do this all over the lawn at about 4 inch intervals, Spread sharp sand over surface and sweep away...

    tom tits

Now then Richardp, Im a Yorkshireman and we give nowt away. I prefer growing toms in buckets with the bucket in a bowl filled with gravel. This is similar to the traditional ring culture method not that common now im told. It has certain advantages. You can stagger the toms to give 18inches...

    Pond Weed

I have this duckweed in my small pond. Its harmless and gives shade to the fish. You never get rid of it completely but just skim it off with a net every now and then. The birds bring it in from other ponds so it a lost cause so to speak. I think it looks quite attractive if controlled.

A tomato will normally try to bush but in order to get decent sized tomatoes you train a single stem up a cane and pinch out the shoots. Stop it at five or six trusses depending on the summer. Long hot summer might rippen seven or eight trusses. Thats a suck it and see part of growing. But...

    Green water

I have only a small nature pond which due to its small surface area is susceptible to turning green. However, I picked up a tip that says that pond plants can be planted in pots of gravel [no soil] It stops fish digging up the lilies etc and as there is no soil so there is no nutrient leaking...

How do you look after a 'special' old patio?

Hello Savcom, I wouldnt use Chlorine to clean with. not healthy! Some may advise blasting it with a power washer but it has disadvantages. It may damage grouting, its a wetting experience and takes a deal of time. I have a large patio and deck which I clean with Stardrops, a...

    Cleaning decking

Much of the moulds that grow on decking are short daylight plants and grow well in the winter months. Now the weather is better and the days are longer you can clean the deck of all the winter dirt etc. You can buy ready to use deck cleaners which are heavy in phosphates but can be...

    Patio cleaning

The sand is a very useful tip Ill try that myself. I once used my neighbours power washer and it took ages. It produces stripes if not done methodically. I tried scrubbing with ready to use deck cleaners but I have a large patio and it cost over £20 in product. I use 'stardrops' which is an...

Best wood stain for panel fence

The best presevered timber will have been pressure treated so that the copper based preservative is forced into the wood. Products like woodstains either oil or water based are surface treatments and will repel water and give colour. They generally will last 5 or 6 years are expensive and best...

want a lawn!-require some advice please

Hello Frixter, may I suggest removing the gravel first and then assess the area for 'flatness' by that I dont mean level. A table top is flat even when its on its side! Some may recommend that you dig over the area but I wouldnt as you would only bring weed seeds to the surface and then have...

    Decking without a frame?

Hi Thermo, Some years ago I built a vary large patio comprising block pave and some expensive granite flags. Then I added a bit of sunbathing decking and a raised deck from the patio doors. Now because it looks a bit too fussy I was thinking about doing just as you say. It looks a very god...
