New EPDM flat roof with patches

Thanks. Yeah I noticed the lumpiness too, strange. So the bond being like a welded joint presumably means that it might not matter too much if the edges lift slightly, there's still going to be a significant amount of bonded material and it shouldn't continue lifting off further over time.

New EPDM flat roof with patches

Just got a new EPDM flat roof installed by a professional. I'm looking at it and I know nothing about rubber roofs. I see these patches at the corner of the roof light and another long one. I guess this is normal to make the rubber fit around the raised portion of the roof light? What I...

Making my garage warmer: covering holes in lintel

Hmm, maybe. But it is an integrated garage (with direct access from the kitchen), so the roof is warm, as are 2 of the walls. So doesn't seem too much of a stretch to insulate. But yeah, the floor is a heat sink. We also have a really nice, very expensive Miele freezer that we bought a few years...

Making my garage warmer: covering holes in lintel

Think I'm going to fill it with expanding foam then cover the holes with a panel. Then once I've fitted a door with a proper seal, at least I won't have the north wind blowing directly into the garage space. I'm pretty sure that is making it colder! More insulation on the other walls will need...

Making my garage warmer: covering holes in lintel

We have an integrated double garage which has no insulation, and lots of gaps down the sides of the garage doors, etc. Gets very cold and dusty. Since I want to relocate the freezer in there, I need to raise the temperature and make the space generally nicer and cleaner. Was starting to...

New stopcock causes reduced flow and new leak?

Could be so. I need to get it changed anyway, it's on an ancient lead pipe and is slightly weeping water. Anyway, I thought it was interesting that the water company team knew right away what it was and what I needed to do, so it is a known phenomenon to them!

New stopcock causes reduced flow and new leak?

Just in case anyone was wondering, I managed to figure this out, it was some kind of airlock. The water company told me to turn the internal stopcock fully off and then fully on again and everything went back to normal. They said this was actually fairly common, although they weren't really able...

New stopcock causes reduced flow and new leak?

Yes it's fully open. Strange though, right? That water filter hasn't leaked for the past 8 years since we installed it. Suddenly leaks today. I try a few things and it still leaks. Then I turn the bath off and right away it stops leaking... could be a co-incidence but why did it leak and why...

New stopcock causes reduced flow and new leak?

Bit of a long saga*, but today the water company came out and fitted a new stopcock at the roadside, because they said the old one might be leaking. The chap said it would be much better to have a new stopcock anyway because the new kind are much easier to turn on/off than the old ones. Anyway...

How can I extend the life of my flat felt roof during lockdown?

Oh I see. There are areas of the roof that are completely sound. Those areas are level and not damaged and it’s easy to see where they are. It’s actually not that hard to work on it without straying from those areas. So if it is just the danger of walking on the damaged areas I don’t think...

How can I extend the life of my flat felt roof during lockdown?

OK so you're saying that adding a bitumen coating is not likely to extend the waterproofing in the short term? And instead is more likely to cause a problem, or acceleration of a problem? Ha. It's the same roof. Back then I got to the point of quotes from roofing guys to put on a new roof but...

How can I extend the life of my flat felt roof during lockdown?

We have an area of flat roof approx 4m by 4m. It's pretty old, appears to be felt with grit on it. There are a couple of areas where it dips, which I know means the timbers have gone underneath and we're planning to have a new roof put on, add insulation, etc as part of a larger building...

Airflow on the warm side of flat roof?

OK thanks for that. I've been studying the installation guidance from Kingspan and a couple of other manufacturers of flat roof insulation, and I don't see any mention there of a need for ventilation on the warm side either. They seem to advise more like what chappers says.

Airflow on the warm side of flat roof?

We have a flat roof, which is over a single storey extension at the back of our house, and is currently covered in felt with no insulation. Local roofing company has suggested removing the boards, then adding an extra layer of counter-battens to provide airflow. Then place 18mm board, then...

    Drilling a hole in wood

[/url] Hmm. I thought about it. But it really only needs a couple of USB cables to go through it and a power cable. And they won't get removed often. So a smaller hole seems better. Not too keen on those plastic grommet things.

    Drilling a hole in wood

So I want to drill some 25mm holes in the top of my desk, to put cables through. The desk is 40mm thick oak. Just wondering what kind of drill bit to buy? Do I want one of these: http://www.screwfix.com/p/hex-shank-holesaw-arbor-9-5mm/11336 plus one of these...

Strange intermittent problem with Mira Excel mixer shower

We have a Mira Excel bath shower mixer, new a couple of years ago. Has been a great shower, up until about a week ago when it suddenly wouldn't go above luke warm. We have a pretty new Vaillant combi boiler feeding it. I hadn't touched the boiler that day, and no other plumbing changes that I...

Lead flashing or rubber boot for SS chimney exit?

Just found this: http://www.stovesonline.co.uk/wood_burning_stoves/Lead-flashings.html which is somewhat reassuring. I do wonder if I should have a "storm collar" though.

Lead flashing or rubber boot for SS chimney exit?

OMG is this never ending :| The roofer suggested the lead and I had no idea I should be worrying about this. The flue is twin-walled and has travelled at least 4 metres from the fire by the time it reaches the roof (the stove is on the ground floor and there are a couple of 45 degree...
