Replacing supply to detached garage - part P notifiable?

Thanks chaps for taking the time & trouble to help with your replies. The shed did have electrics at some time but is has been disconnected (not by me). There is no sign of where it was connected to the existing power cable which feeds the garage even though there is a junction box at the...

Replacing supply to detached garage - part P notifiable?

Hi there, I want to replace approximately 15 metres of MICC/Pyro cable buried in my back garden - a power feed from the house to a detached garage - with SWA for a couple of reasons. I want to protect the cable better - at present the cable is barely 2-3" below ground under weak...

Waste outlet for wash basin -newbie advice please

Thanks for comments. I don't think I can increase pipe size from 32 because there is already a notch on top of 3x joists where the 1000mm section crosses on top of them. @swidders: Sorry but still confused about the basic reason for 88½°, 92½° bends etc. If they are 90 bends and of...

Waste outlet for wash basin -newbie advice please

Hi. I had a flood from our upstairs bathroom after a compression bend came off a 32mm waste outlet pipe from a wash basin, caused when using a pump-type sink unblocker. The previous installer had not made a particularly neat job of the layout nor with the water pipework either. I have...

Do my friction hinges suit top or side hung?

Does top or side hung refer to the position of the hinge or the window movement? One of my windows (1.5m W x 1.0m H approx) needs a replacement hinge. The main section of glazing is fixed and running along the top of this are two opening windows. Each opening window has a handle on the...

Bay Window Roof Insulation - Advice Please

Thanks, Sorry if this seems a daft question but does this refer to the creation of a vertical gap between each joist and the Celotex (to allow the passage of warm air into the roof space), or a horizontal gap above and below the Celotex (to allow ventilation in and around the top & bottom of...

    Bay window new ceiling

CyberStGeorge, it seems not only are you helpful in this thread but also in my other thread too - http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=114278 I had abandoned the older thread because I thought I might have been asking too many questions at the same time to allow anyone to feel like...

Bay Window Roof Insulation - Advice Please

Thanks for the reply. As it happens I grabbed some Celotex insulation equivalent from Xtratherm at the weekend so I would like to use it. Is there a way to identify if the felt is breathable? Assuming I don't have either that or tile vents, I think there will still be air circulation above...

    Bay window new ceiling

Fantastic. Thanks for replying. I actually went to our local well-known builders merchant and asked for foil backed plasterboard but was told they didn't stock it. Afterwards I went to another timber company and could not see any amongst the ordinary on their shelves either. This coupled with...

    Bay window new ceiling

Hello, Is it recommended to include a vapour barrier to protect the insulation & timbers during renovation? Alternatively, will it do any harm to put up 1000 gauge polythene before plasterboarding? Bay is in the front living room. Roof is insulated using 50mm cavity wall boards between the...

Bay Window Roof Insulation - Advice Please

Hi there! I have a 1920s bay window with sloping roof atached to my lounge. The original lath & plaster ceiling in the bay (1m deep x 2m wide) deteriorated so I removed it. Since there was no insulation fitted I would like to insulate the bay ceiling as efficiently as is sensibly...

Are DIY stud detectors any good?

Will they indicate the presence of studs or joists fairly easily - even behind lath & plaster walls or ceilings? Can anyone recommend a model they use, or even suggest the ones to avoid? Thanks.

    Sash lock size

What is the rule of thumb when selecting a lock size to fit to a new external door? The door timber thickness is 44mm and 93mm deep. I purchased a 78mm deep lock based on what I saw on the old door but now feel that there wouldn't seem much material left after cutting the mortice out...

What to use to fill gap under uPVC Window?

I have a new uPVC window sitting on a single brick wall (ie no cavity). In actual fact it's sitting on a couple of plastic window packers. The resultant gap under the cill that the window sits on varies about 5-10mm along the entire length, which is actually noticeably large when the wind blows...

Opinion on blocking up small flue

Are the lightweight blocks like these just as good as a replacement for house bricks? I'm wondering which is the most convenient to use in order to best fit the void. Cheers

Opinion on blocking up small flue

Thanks noseall, I'm not sure whether the closuep.jpg piccy in my first post helps much but it was meant to highlight that if the diagonal-facing brickwork were to be removed, there would seem that only half the wall thickness is left to join the corner of the house, downstairs at least...

Opinion on blocking up small flue

We have a room which was once a kitchen but has since been knocked through into the dining room (ie now one large room the width of the house). Following the replacement of the window on what was once the kitchen wall, I am now moving on to replaster the whole wall. In doing so I thought I...

Joist hole size for plastic pipe

Is there a recommended drill hole size when threading 15mm plastic pipe through timber joists? Presumably it shouldn't be too close to allow for expansion but I don't want to go unecessarily oversize either. Thanks.

    PEX or Polybutylene

I see. As Onetap states, problems occured with the fittings themselves and attacked by the chlorine. So is Polybutylene on the way out to be replaced with PEX-based products? Or have the UK manufactures overcome this? So would it be wise to err on the side of caution, and use Speedfit...

    PEX or Polybutylene

When selecting plastic pipe, why would you typically choose one over the other please? Edit: Typical, find a hint of an answer straight after posting! Is Polybuylene the one that has the inner barrier to prevent air getting in, i.e., used when doing Central Heating?
