    copied from electrics

I recently replaced my HW cylinder and discovered that the supply to the immersion heater which has been there for 20 years has a e-n short. This is a dedicated feed and the board end was not earthed but has an MCB. Running a new cable is not practical so immersion is dissed. I would...

    e-n short

That is what i thought. I had hoped to get it rectified under guarantee but neighbour has now said guarantee was only 15 years. Quite annoyed that someone actually connected this in the first place, they clearly knew of the fault. Testing from the socket shows it to be ok at first until i...

    Megaflo System - Poor performance

Around here lots of old lead pipe. Running a new mdpe pipe is sometimes usless if it connects to the old meter/stoptap as that short bit to the main cannot handle the demand. This means the road has to be dug up to access the main for a new supply. This is more expensive and starts about...

    How's my CU looking?

I would suggest that F16 at 1/200 sec would give a much better depth of view thus eliminating fuzziness.

    Rain water for HW system

It is not just bugs either. I have a rainwater cistern and when the prevailing wind is from northern europe can smell metallic and sulphurous. Organic metal compounds from coal power stations and steel plants are another possible nasty. Filtering will not remove pathogens. Ozone deals with...

    london gas fitting

I am in west london. Recently put ACOPS + training on hold due to market conditions. Some seem to be ok but now is not a very good time to be building a new business. Something like 20 pages of plumbing+ heating ads in YP. Know several subbies on the wet plumbing side who are not doing well...

    Hot water from vent pipe

I thought he meant the header tank, he also says it is continuously overflowing. If overflow level is above float valve it could be a stuck float valve which he cannot see. Hot water could just be overpumping possibly made worse by elevated level and expansion pipe not high enough. You...

    Bathroom Swap

Is this a real job or an excercise ? Have you considered tiling ? If tiled does the customer have existing tiles, if so does he have enough spares to make good, are the same tiles available? Do you have liability insurance ? Making good after a bath swap can cost more in time than the...

Shower Pump on Shared Cold Supply

Ah right. That should be okay, it may or may not not stop the pump from spluttering when the tap is turned though in that position. The cure that i have seen working has the valve on the pump input which is not a good idea. G20 idea seems reasonable if it is not too much work.

Shower Pump on Shared Cold Supply

Yes it should, i have seen it done for that reason on a few occasions. It may be sensitive to orientation though. However i would advise against it if at all possible. Placing a check valve on the input side of the pump can damage it. I have seen a small no. but one was catastrophic...

Just signed up at Local College to do Bpec Gas Foundation

10 days seems to be very short. Course I did was about 30 and was mainly about the small jobs such as float valve , leaks , tap changes , showers etc. We did practice bathroom installs cylinder swaps rad changes etc. That market seems to have dried up though. I did have past experience and...

    Water pressure problem

Simon has said pretty much what you need to do. Get measurments of pressure and flowrate first. 9L min as you have measured is an indication but some mixer taps restrict flow and can give an erroneous reading. Before you get someone in however it would be a good idea to check the outside...
