Just to get this right You are heating the H/W in your new cylinder by connecting the coil in the new cylinder to the solar circuit. Then passing the pre heated H/W into the old cylinder to be heated - if needed - by the boiler/heating circuit. Not 100% sure how the flow to your H/W...

I would recommend that you make provision for the pump breaking down and connect directly to the DHW before the pump using a gate valve to isolate this branch in pipework. Then if the pump does knacker at least you have a way of getting some hot water even if it is at a reduced flow rate...

I personally wouldn't do it - Drill the hole for you i mean. Wouldn't be worth getting the core drill off the van for the money I could charge. I suggest you ask around see if you have a friend of a friend who has a drill or can do it for you.
